Notes: Summary We report the measurements of the3 D(3s4d)-3 P(3s3p)3 D(3s5d)-3 P(3s3p), and3 P(3p 2)-3 P(3s3p) transition frequency of MgI, the fine-structure separation and isotope shift between24Mg and26Mg. The measurements have been performed in a metastable atomic beam; a good agreement is found for data already existing in the literature. The accuracy of the measurements reported in this paper is mainly limited by the Doppler broadening of theI 2 transitions used as a reference and by the precision in the knowledge of the related wavelengths.

Notes: Summary I discuss the possibility of performing a test of the symmetrization postulate for bosons by high-sensitivity spectroscopy of16O2. I show that the sensitivity required to give significant information can be easily achieved by well-developed spectroscopic methods.

Notes: Summary The p P(k=9) magnetic-dipole transition of the oxygen 0-0 vibrational band of the red systemb 1Σ g + ←X 3Σ g − was observed with absorption spectroscopy using a tunable CW diode laser. A systematic investigation of the self-collisional broadening was performed for different gas pressures and temperatures. The temperature dependence of the self-broadening coefficient was determined to beT −(1.02±0.05). Our results are of interest for collisional theory and as reference data in atmospheric monitoring applications.

Notes: Summary We used polarization spectroscopy to perform a high-resolution investigation of atomic oxygen in the visible and near-infrared spectral region by means of dye and semiconductor diode lasers. We measured the fine structure of the highly excited 4d 5 D level and resolved the hyperfine structure of the metastable 3s 5 S 2 level of17O. Isotope shift values are also reported for several transitions of the three stable oxygen isotopes (16O,17O,18O). Polarization lineshapes are discussed and compared with those obtained in saturation techniques.

Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Sono state investigate le forme di riga di transizioni del neon mediante la spettroscopia optogalvanica in intermodulazione.
Notes: Summary We have investigated sub-Doppler lineshapes of neon transitions by means of intermodulated optogalvanic technique in a direct current hollow cathode and a radio frequency glow discharge. The intermodulated Doppler-free signal, as usual, is superimposed on a broad Gaussian background due to velocity-changing collisions. The ratio between the collisional and the homogeneous signal has been systematically investigated as a function of gas pressure and discharge current. By detecting neon as a trace in other buffer gases, the lineshapes have been also carefully investigated as a function of the mass of the perturbers (helium and argon). Comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental data leads to quantitative evaluations of collisional parameters.

Notes: The result of a Doppler-limited and sub-Doppler optical laser spectroscopic investigation of atomic oxygen is presented. Atomic oxygen is produced in a O2–noble gas radio-frequency discharge of moderate power. The analysis of the atoms produced is performed by monitoring both fluorescence and the optogalvanic signal for oxygen optical transitions between highly excited levels. Doppler broadening measurements illustrate a nonequilibrium thermal distribution selective on the spin value and on the gas used to sustain the discharge. A simple model based on energy transfer processes is proposed to explain the observed phenomena.

Notes: Abstract A visible diode laser emitting at 690 nm at room temperature has been frequency-stabilized using a simple scheme based on optical feedback from a diffraction grating. The possibilities offered by these lasers for high-resolution spectroscopy are demonstrated by recording the sub-Doppler signal of the 689 nm intercombination line of strontium and resolving the hyperfine structure of the close P63 R70 (8, 4) transitions of iodine.

Notes: Abstract Resonant laser-induced changes of the dielectric constant of atomic or molecular gases are detected as deviations in the oscillation frequency of a circuit including the sample itself as a component. Heterodyne detection allows high sensitivity. The new non-intrusive technique is demonstrated in the spectroscopic investigation of neon and sodium atoms.

Notes: Abstract Continuously tunable ultraviolet laser radiation at 397 nm was generated by doubling the output of a semiconductor diode laser. The fundamental radiation was provided by a 150 mW AlGaAs laser diode injected by a low-power AlGaAs laser diode which was frequency stabilized by optical feedback using a new scheme of a miniature external cavity. Second-harmonic generation was produced in a lithium-triborate crystal placed in a compact enhancement cavity. The fundamental radiation was used for sub-Doppler spectroscopy of the Ar I 4s 3 P 0 0−4p 1 P 1 transition at 795 nm; the second-harmonic radiation was used for spectroscopy of the Ca II 42 S 1/2−42 P 1/2 transition at 397 nm.

Notes: Abstract Saturated-absorption signals on the calcium 657 nm transition are observed by direct absorption using diode lasers and a high flux atomic-beam cell. Line-widths as narrow as 65 kHz are observed with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Prospects for using this system as a compact wavelength/frequency reference are considered.
