    Notes: 207Pb/206Pb ages are presented for detrital zircons (Laser Ablation Microprobe ICP-MS) and whole-rock Nd isotopic determinations (TIMS) from samples of Neoarchean and Palaeoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks from the Umba granulite terrane and the Keivy domain of the Central Kola composite terrane, Kola Peninsula, north-western Russia. Three are samples of rocks from the Umba granulite terrane that were deposited ≈ 2.20–1.90 Ga; they contain Archaean detritus, much of it older than 3.0 Gyr, as well as abundant 2.20–1.95-Gyr-old material. Deposition may have occurred on the margin of an Archaean craton with an exposed Palaeoproterozoic magmatic arc source, possibly during orogenesis. Two samples from the Keivy domain have remarkably similar, dominantly Archaean detrital zircon age spectra. One was deposited pre-2.4 Ga, whereas the other was probably deposited post-2.01 Ga. Both had similar sources, compatible with the proximal country rocks, and possible shallow-water (?) cratonic margin depositional settings.

    Description: 40Ar/39Ar step-heating dating of mineral separates from a series of lamprophyre dykes in the Saxothuringian Zone of the Variscan Orogen yielded Visean-Namurian (334-323 Ma) and Stephanian-early Permian (297-295 Ma) crystallization ages indicating magma generation over a period of 30 Ma. In many cases, dyke emplacement was controlled by faults. Many are composite or show evidence for mingling of primitive and evolved magmas, and, to a certain degree, contamination with crustal melts. The high MgO (6-7 wt%), Ni (75-270 ppm) and Cr (140-1250 ppm) contents and mafic phenocryst assemblage are evidence for derivation from a mantle source. Kersantites and minettes have similar incompatible trace-element and rare earth element (REE) patterns (light REE (LREE)- and medium REE (MREE)-enriched and heavy REE (HREE)-depleted) and high, but varying Th, Zr and Hf contents. Positive Ni v. Mg# (FeO=FeOtot) correlations suggest early fractionation of olivine, and the general absence of negative Eu anomalies makes feldspar fractionation improbable. For the lamprophyres of the Spessart, the variations of Ba, Rb and TiO2 indicate phlogopite fractionation. Negative Ta, Nb and Ti anomalies are common, and may be an artefact of the high large ion lithophile element (LILE) and REE contents, but are more likely to reflect derivation from a mantle source that was metasomatized during a previous (Devonian?) subduction event. The generation of the parent melts was possibly triggered by partial melting of metasomatized mantle due to lithosphere detachment, removal and replacement of metasomatized lithospheric mantle by upwelling hot asthenospheric mantle. Compared to the spessartites, the minettes and kersantites appear to have originated by partial melting of deeper-mantle sources. Lithospheric mantle detachment may have caused post-collisional Namurian uplift and cooling of the crust, and facilitated emplacement of lamprophyre dykes along fault zones at high crustal levels.

    Description: An extensive rift system developed within the northern foreland of the Variscan orogenic belt during Late Carboniferous-Early Permian times, post-dating the Devonian-Early Carboniferous accretion of various Neoproterozoic Gondwana-derived terranes on to the southern margin of Laurussia (Laurentia-Baltica; Fig. 1). Rifting was associated with widespread magmatism and with a fundamental change, at the Westphalian-Stephanian boundary, in the regional stress field affecting western and central Europe (Ziegler 1990; Ziegler & Cloetingh 2003). The change in regional stress patterns was coincident with the termination of orogenic activity in the Variscan fold belt, followed by major dextral translation between North Africa and Europe. Rifting propagated across a collage of basement terranes with different ages and thermal histories. Whilst most of the Carboniferous-Permian rift basins of NW Europe developed on relatively thin lithosphere, the highly magmatic Oslo Graben in southern Norway initiated within the thick, stable and, presumably, strong (cold) lithosphere of the Fennoscandian craton. The rift basins in the North Sea, in contrast, developed in younger Caledonian age lithosphere, which was both thinner and warmer than the lithosphere of the craton to the east. A regional hiatus, corresponding to the Early Stephanian, is evident in much of the Variscan foreland, with Stephanian and Early Permian red beds unconformably overlying truncated Westphalian series (e.g. McCann 1996) (Fig. 2). Regional uplift coincides with the onset of voluminous magmatism across the region, raising the possibility that uplift could have been related to the presence of a widespread thermal anomaly within the upper mantle (i.e. a mantle plume or, possibly, several plumes).     Description: The effects of a crude oil spill and remediation on the biological quality of an agricultural soil were examined based on three microbiological indices: microbial biomass carbon (MBC), dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and microbial metabolic diversity (MMD). The soils in both contaminated and uncontaminated plots were clay loam Gleyed Rego Black Chernozems developed from lacustrine materials overlying till. The four remedial treatments consisted of: meadow bromegrass (Bromus biebersteinii. Rohman and Schult), alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. ‘Algonquin’), fallow with wheat straw incorporation (SF) and unamended fallow (UFSP). An unamended fallow on adjacent uncontaminated land served as a control (UFCON). The spill had a statistically significant, negative effect on MBC and MMD (P = 0.01 and 0.05, respectively). Although a negative effect on DHA was not significant (P = 0.05), the results show evident trends. The forage treatments were, overall, significantly more effective than the SF treatment in restoring soil biological quality in hydrocarbon contaminated soil to control levels. Based on overall trends only, bromegrass had the greatest effect on soil biological quality relative to the UFSP, followed by alfalfa. The incorporation of wheat straw did not significantly affect any of the examined microbial indices.     Description: The current view regarding the timing of regionally developed penetrative tectonic fabrics in sedimentary rocks is that their development postdates lithification of those rocks. In this case, fabric development is achieved by a number of deformation mechanisms, including grain rigid body rotation, crystal-plastic deformation, and pressure solution. The latter is believed to be the primary mechanism responsible for the domainal structure of cleavage in low-grade metamorphic rocks. In this study we combine field observations with strain studies to characterize considerable (〉50%) Acadian crustal shortening in a Devonian clastic sedimentary sequence from southwest Ireland. Despite these high levels of shortening there is a marked absence of the domainal cleavage structure and intraclast deformation that are expected with this level of deformation. Fabrics in these rocks are predominantly a product of rigid body rotation and repacking of extraformational clasts during deformation of a clastic sedimentary sequence before lithification was complete.

    Description: In functional genomics it is more rule than exception that experimental designs are used to generate the data. The samples of the resulting data sets are thus organized according to this design and for each sample many biochemical compounds are measured, e.g. typically thousands of gene-expressions or hundreds of metabolites. This results in high-dimensional data sets with an underlying experimental design. Several methods have recently become available for analyzing such data while utilizing the underlying design. We review these methods by putting them in a unifying and general framework to facilitate understanding the (dis-)similarities between the methods. The biological question dictates which method to use and the framework allows for building new methods to accommodate a range of such biological questions. The framework is built on well known fixed-effect ANOVA models and subsequent dimension reduction. We present the framework both in matrix algebra as well as in more insightful geometrical terms. We show the workings of the different special cases of our framework with a real-life metabolomics example from nutritional research and a gene-expression example from the field of virology.

    Description: A monchquite dyke, in the vicinity of Loch Roag, Lewis, Outer Hebrides has an unusually enriched chemistry, and contains a unique assemblage of megacrysts and xenoliths from the lithosphere of the Hebridean craton. A 40 Ar/ 39 Ar plateau age of 45.2 ± 0.2 Ma (2) of a phlogopite megacryst from the dyke overlaps an earlier reported K–Ar age, and confirms that the British Palaeogene Igneous Province extended into the Eocene. Similar late low-volume melts were erupted in the Eocene and Oligocene in West and East Greenland, suggesting that such late-stage magmatic rejuvenescence is a widespread feature across the North Atlantic Igneous Province.
