Notes: The conventional thermal-wave treatment following the Rosencwaig–Gersho theory is used to analyze the manner in which the properties of a layer buried within a sample influence the amplitude and the phase of surface-temperature oscillation during periodic heating by chopped light. This method can be applied to evaluate materials nondestructively in a manner similar to eddy current testing of electrically conductive layered samples: First experimental results on determining the thickness of a thin layer between an aluminum block and a 0.5-mm-thick blackened aluminum sheet are presented.

Notes: Abstract An adhesive layer, by which a piezoceramic foil is attached to an aluminum membrane for telephone application, is examined in a nondestructive way by thermal waves. The basic principles of the method are outlined, and its detecting power is demonstrated by evaluation of a well-defined delamination.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Low density polyethylene rods smoothed with a microtome knife were partially covered and ion-etched in an Ar-rf-plasma. The resulting steps were measured with an inductive device (“talystep”) and plotted versus the corresponding etching periods. The resulting etching rates indicate the existence of a 1 μm thick layer of increased resistivity, deeper regions beeing removed faster. Scratches by faults of the knife represent regions of especially high deformation. Ion etching of these regions effects the formation of line by line structures, the mean frequency of which giving an estimate of the relative local orientation. Examination of these structures by a scanning electron microscope indicates the existence of toughening deformations extending until a depth of about 4 μm

Notes: Abstract A nonstationary method to measure the thermal diffusivity of polymer foils with thicknesses between 10 and 40μm normal to the foil plane is described. The principle of the experimental technique is a modification of the photoacoustic effect. The quantity that is measured, is the phase angle between the modulation of the light intensity and the pressure variation as a function of frequency. A theoretical treatment of the phenomenon is presented which enables the evaluation of the diffusivity from the experimental data. It is possible to measure absolute values of the thermal diffusivity with an accuracy in the order of three percent and relative changes in the thermal diffusivity, e. g. by drawing, of one percent. Measurements were performed on commercial PETP foils of 19 and 30μm thickness drawn along various directions. For draw ratios up to 1.3 the diffusivity decreased about 20 percent or increased about 10 percent, depending on the foil thickness and the treatment during manufacture. The results can be interpreted with the aggregate model of Kilian and Pietralla as well as with the two-phase model of Choy and Young.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Commercially available PETP-films oriented by the manufacturing process are investigated by small angle light scattering (SALS). The twofold symmetry shown by the scattering patterns allows to determine two main directions of the films. Drawing into these directions results in very distinct stress strain behavior. Combined investigations with SALS, scanning electron microscope and IR absorption measurements suggest the partially crystalline and light scattering structures to be either stretched and deformed as wholes or to be “unpicked” from the edges in the direction of pulling.

Description / Table of Contents: Acoustic Emission Analysis on Short Glass Fibre Reinforced Thermoplastics (GRP). - The Influence of Fibre length DistributionIn this work a model is developed which relates the length of the glass fibres to the acoustic emission curve. In this model if one assumes that it is possible to strain the matrix infinitely then the emitted acoustic emission due to fibre fracture can be qualitatively analysed. It is also assumed that the mean length of the fibres, as related to their diameter, is considered to be the most important parameter for the probability of a fibre to fracture. This probability B, is 1 for a long thin fibre, and with an ever decreasing fibre length, this value tends towards O. It is possible, with these assumptions, to predict that the acoustic emission curve will have the form ∊B exp∊B, where ∊ is the applied strain. This model is supported by experimental results.
