Notes: This paper reports the results of a comparative study of chalcopyrite-structure CuInSe2 deposited by three techniques, three-source evaporation, reactive sputtering and a hybrid sputtering, and evaporation method. All films exhibit comparable microstructures and microchemistries. Evaporated and hybrid-process films include significant porosity. All layers show dislocations, twins, and stacking faults. No second phases were observed in layers deposited by any of the techniques, independent of film composition. Data supporting this conclusion include average and single-grain energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy measurements, diffraction studies of the film structure, and transmission electron microscopy images of the films. Finally, grain sizes can be increased by annealing films at temperatures above 400 °C.

Notes: Abstract Large numbers of man-made lakes occur throughout S Africa. Although primarily designed for specific water supply purposes, most of these lakes fulfill a multipurpose role. The need for such large numbers of reservoirs is related to vagaries in rainfall and runoff; these uncertainties have led to the development of a philosophy of conserving water quantity, which has created some unusual limnological conditions. Examination of the hydrography and limnology of 64 S African impoundments reveals that both basin morphometry and water retention times are affected by natural (drought/flood) and artificial (drawdown) factors which, in turn, affect the hydrodynamics of the lakes, whilst the introduction of treated effluents as a water conservation measure gives rise to a large percentage of enriched lakes having extremely high productivity.

Notes: Abstract A major decrease in air temperature with an increase in wind stress created thermal instability resulting in overturn. Surface oxygen values decreased from 12.6 (170% saturation) prior to overturn to 0.4 mg · l−1 (5.7%) after overturn. Recovery of surface oxygen concentrations to supersaturation took approximately three months. Changes in the nitrogen balance after overturn indicated that extremely high rates of nitrification occurred. Little change in phosphorus concentration was observed. Surface chlorophyll concentrations decreased from 235 to approximately 2 mg · m−3, resulting in very low primary production values (Amax = 12.4 mg C m−3 h−1). Reduced rates of primary production were maintained for several months after overturn, mainly owing to the low ratio of Zeu/Zm (0.17). No significant changes occurred in the total bacterial population other than a redistribution within the water column. Significant changes occurred in the distribution and density of the zooplankton population. No fish kills were observed although fish populations were oxygen-stressed.

Notes: Abstract An investigation of the phosphorus loading characteristics of 31 southern African man-made was lakes made. The lakes were characterized by low water retention times, with most of the lakes having retention times of less than one year. Catchment phosphorus export rates showed wide variation (1–162 mg P m-2 y-1) with those lakes experiencing excessive municipal wastewater inputs having export rates in excess of 53 mg m-2 y-1. The phosphorus data were tested against the Vollenweider (1976) and Dillon & Rigler (1974) phosphorus budget models which predict in-lake steady state concentrations of phosphorus. It was found that both models displayed good potential for the prediction of steady state concentrations of phosphorus, with better results being obtained from the Dillon & Rigler (1974) model. However, because phosphorus concentrations within these lakes may not necessarily be related to trophic status the use of these models as a predictive tool for eutrophication control still requires further development.

Notes: Abstract Experiments are described in which structured discharges, including stationary and moving striations, were observed in 4 MHz rf plasmas generated using two solenoidal coil configurations. The structured plasmas which formed in the vicinity of the solenoidal coils were not quenched when elaborate precautions were taken to shield the capacitive electric fields. Measurements of the rf power input to the plasma and the resistance reflected by the plasma into the drive circuit showed no discontinuous change during the formation or disappearance of the structured discharges surrounding the solenoidal coils. Observations of striated rf discharges reported by other investigators are reviewed. Arguments are given to support the conclusion that the striation-like structures observed in rf plasmas and the moving striations observed in dc plasmas are part of the same general family.

Notes: Abstract The role of biotic processes in a warm, monomictic, hypertrophic African impoundment (Hartbeespoort Dam) is examined using 32P radiobioassays. Phosphorus demand is assessed by phosphorus turnover times, alkaline phosphatase activity, cellular phosphorus status and the phosphorus deficiency index. Long turnover times indicative of an enriched system were recorded, ranging from 9 h to 1992 h, with no evidence of phosphorus stress being present. These turnover times support the hypothesis that the phosphorus cycle in Hartbeespoort Dam is dominated by the algal community which is shown to play an important role in phosphorus cycling within the water column. However, hydrological processes remain the driving force in phosphorus seasonality in the lake.

Notes: Abstract Hartbeespoort Dam, a hypertrophic, warm monomictic impoundment in South Africa, receives extremely high phosphorus loads (14.6–25.9 g m−2 a−1) that are dominated by point source discharges from municipal wastewater treatment works. The reduced state of the phosphorus discharged from the works has led to the dominance of the dissolved phosphorus pool by low molecular weight orthophosphates which are analytically detectable as soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP; 60% of total phosphorus pool). Seasonality in the in-lake total phosphorus pool is regulated by a combination of abiotic and hydrological processes; biotic processes appear to play a minor role. Mass balance calculations indicate that between 62 and 77% of the annual total phosphorus inflow load is retained within the impoundment each year.

Notes: Summary This paper contrasts the traditional engineering approach to eutrophication management with a proposed systems approach. Legislative, social, economic and technical aspects of eutrophication are identified. Through the use of some recent case studies, the importance of the socioeconomic factors relative to the legal-technical aspects of eutrophication management is highlighted. Whilst the latter retain their vital role in eutrophication control programmes, this paper suggests that the former cannot be ignored, and recommends adoption of a systems approach to the management of eutrophication.
