Notizen: Detailed soil and vegetation analysis at Pant-y-dwr Hill Centre illustrated the main physical, chemical and biological factors involved in low output from rough grazing on 5 soil series, ranging from acid brown earth to undifferentiated peat, which are representative of most of upland mid-Wales. While all the soils, derived from Silurian shale, had low pH and base saturation status and high lime, phosphate and potash requirements, the principal restraint on the productivity of resown grassland, particularly on the wet peaty gleys, was low available N status.

Notizen: The effects of three levels of potash, phosphate and lime fertilizers on the yield and mineral content of white clover (Trifolium repens) and on soil nutrient levels were studied in a field experiment over 7 years. The aim of the experiment was to define an optimum fertilizer programme for breeding nurseries and experimental fields.Potash was the main factor limiting production: clover yield was negligible after 2 years where no potassium was applied. Phosphate increased yields after the third year, while liming had no significant effect on clover yield. The soil potassium status improved with the repeated application of potash over the 7–year period, but no consistent pattern was discernible for the phosphate treatments. There was a slight increase in soil pH with liming.Application of phosphate increased the phosphorous content of herbage, but had no effect on other plant constituents for the first 2 years. Subsequent applications increased the calcium and sodium contents. Potash reduced the content of all constituents other than potassium as the treatment levels increased. Lime had little effect on plant constituents other than calcium.

Notizen: In C12H18N2O2.H2O, the oximic OH group is anti (trans) to the quinoid carbonyl group, thus there are no intramolecular hydrogen bonds in the molecule. Extensive intermolecular interactions between neighbouring quinone oxime molecules and associated water molecules are observed. Bond distances are intermediate between those predicted for the 1,2-quinoneoxime and 2,5-oxime imino forms.

Notizen: Measurements of the viscosities of a number of polymer-solvent systems have shown that an exponential expression, η = η0e[η]c, is applicable in the Concentration range up to c = 0.13 g./lOO cc. of solvent to within the precision of the experimental measurements. This exponential equat.ion lends itself readily to the determination of the intrinsic viscosity [η] from a single determination of η/η0 and is therefore of great use in determining molecular weights of high polymers from a Houwink-type expression. At higher concentrations, departures from the exponential equation occur, but agreement remains reasonably good up to a con- centration of 1 g./l00 cc. of solvent. The experimental results are compared with those predicted by the exponential expression and with those expected from a Huggins-type equation in which k′ = 0.5, which corresponds to the first two terms of the expanded form of the exponential.

Beschreibung: SUMMARYThe primary growth of eight varieties from three species—white clover (3), red clover (4) and lucerne (1)—was sampled at fortnightly intervals during 2 years and the percentage N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na and in vitro dry-matter digestibility (IVD) were determined.Differences between species, date of sampling and years were highly significant for all constituents. Clover was significantly different from lucerne for all constituents except P, and white from red clover with the exception of Ca. There was a steady decrease in N, P, K, Na and IVD with advance of date of cutting but no marked trend in Ca and Mg. Some constituents changed considerably from first to second year, decreasingin the case of Ca, and increasing for N, P andNa; the remainder K, Mg, and IVD changed only 4–8%.The varieties did not give the same relative results in the 2 years for P, K and Ca content, but there was no interaction for N, Na, Mg, IVD content. Species differences accounted for mostof these interactions.Percentage composition is discussed in relation to the needs of cattle and it is concluded that these herbage legumes provided sufficient Ca, Mg, N, K, and Na (white clover, and the firsttwo cuts of S. 123 red clover and lucerne only) for milk production and growth. The level of P fell below the quoted needs of a 20 kg/day milking cow but was adequate for growth.
