Description: The Southern Ocean may contribute a considerable amount to the proposed global network of marine protected areas (MPAs) that should cover about 10 % of the world's oceans in 2020. In the Antarctic, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) is responsible for this task, and currently Germany leads a corresponding scientific evaluation of the wider Weddell Sea region. Compared to other marine regions within the Southern Ocean, the Weddell Sea is exceptionally well investigated. A tremendous amount of data and information has been produced over the last 4 decades. Here, we give a systematic overview of all data sources collected in the context of the Weddell Sea MPA planning process. The compilation of data sources is comprised of data produced by scientists and institutions from more than 20 countries that were either available within our institutes, downloaded via data portals or transcribed from the literature. It is the first compilation for this area that includes abiotic data, such as bathymetry and sea ice, and ecological data from zooplankton, zoobenthos, fish, birds and marine mammals. All data layer products based on this huge compilation of environmental and ecological data are available from the data publisher PANGAEA via the six persistent identifiers at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.899595 (Pehlke and Teschke, 2019), https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.899667 (Teschke et al., 2019a), https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.899645 (Teschke et al., 2019b), https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.899591 (Teschke et al., 2019c), https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.899520 (Pehlke et al., 2019a) and https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.899619 (Pehlke et al., 2019b). This compilation of data sources including the final data layer products will serve future research and monitoring well beyond the current MPA development process.

Description: As the global environmental crisis grows in scale and complexity, conservation professionals and policymakers are increasingly called upon to make decisions despite high levels of uncertainty, limited resources, and insufficient data. Global efforts to protect biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction require substantial international cooperation and negotiation, both of which are characterized by unpredictability and high levels of uncertainty. Here we build on recent studies to adapt forecasting techniques from the fields of hazard prediction, risk assessment, and intelligence analysis to forecast the likelihood of marine protected area (MPA) designation in the Southern Ocean. We used two questionnaires, feedback, and a discussion round in a Delphi-style format expert elicitation to obtain forecasts, and collected data on specific biophysical, socioeconomic, geopolitical, and scientific factors to assess how they shape and influence these forecasts. We found that areas further north along the Western Antarctic Peninsula were considered to be less likely to be designated than areas further south, and that geopolitical factors, such as global politics or events, and socioeconomic factors, such as the presence of fisheries, were the key determinants of whether an area was predicted to be more or less likely to be designated as an MPA. Forecasting techniques can be used to inform protected area design, negotiation, and implementation in highly politicized situations where data is lacking by aiding with spatial prioritization, targeting scarce resources, and predicting the success of various spatial arrangements, interventions, or courses of action.

Description: The dataset comprises a total of 9,540 records of semi-quantitative data for 53 benthic invertebrate taxa and fish from 180 trawl samples (Agassiz trawl, bottom trawl, Rauschert dredge, benthopelagic trawl). The semi-quantitative data represent four categories regarding the frequency of occurrence of the benthic taxa (i.e. 0 = absent, 1 = rare, 2 = common and 3 = very common). The dataset was collected on the shelf and slope of the eastern Weddell Sea and Lazarev Sea, near Bouvet Island and the region at the north western tip of the Antarctic Peninsula (depth range: 64 - 2334 m) between 1989 and 2004 onboard "Polarstern". Cruises ANT VII/4 (1989), ANT IX/3 (1990/91), ANT XIII/3 (1996), ANT XV/3 (1998) and ANT XXI/2 (2003/2004) contributed to the data collection.

Description: The dataset comprises abundances and lengths of the Pacific oyster Magellana gigas (formerly Crassostrea gigas). The data were collected at 14 sites along the pier system around the island of Helgoland in the German Bight, North Sea (54°11' N, 7°53' E). Ten replicate quadrats (0.25 m²) were placed at the vertical pier walls at each site by SCUBA divers. In each replicate quadrat, all oysters were counted and measured in 2005, 2006 and 2012.
