    Notes: Based on a fully relaxed molecular-mechanics approach, we present a complete series of atomic force microscopy images of the NaCl(001) surface. For a given atomic structure of a diamond probe-tip [111] oriented, we analyze the results obtained from the two usual imaging modes either based on the monitoring of lateral or vertical forces. By accounting for the atomic relaxation of the whole system for any tip-sample configuration, we were able to get new insights about the achievement of atomic resolution on such substrates. Depending on the tip-sample distance range, the scanning of the NaCl(001) surface results in completely different behaviors associated with these two imaging modes. At very short distance we observed an increase of the apparent corrugation when working with the lateral force mode. The perturbations generated in the images by the presence of localized defects (vacancy and monoatomic step) are also analyzed within this model. These last calculations clearly indicate the fundamental role played by the relaxation phenomena on the observed topography when the tip scans the surface defects. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Vacuum packaging is very important for some micro-electro-mechanical systems(MEMS) devices to perform their basic functions properly and to enhance their reliability bykeeping these devices away from harmful external environment. In order to maintain high vacuumin a cavity of MEMS devices, residual gases and leaking gases must be eliminated by embeddedgetter materials. Micro/Nano film getters absorbing gases inside the tiny cavity of MEMSpackaging were introduced in this paper. The fabrication and characterization of micro/nano gettersfor MEMS applications were also presented. Various kinds of patterned getter films were preparedfor different MEMS applications. The activation temperature and sorption capacity of the nonevaporablegetter (NEG[1]) films was investigated. The formation of micro/nano films on the innersurface of MEMS devices is totally compatible with Si-based MEMS process and illustrates theapplicability of the technique in vacuum maintenance of MEMS devices

    Notes: The conductivity mechanism for a carbon black (CB) filled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) compound was investigated in this work. From the experimental results obtained, it can be seen that the relation between electrical current density (J) and applied voltage across the sample (V) coincides with Simmons's equation (i.e., the electrical resistivity of the compound decreases with the applied voltage, especially at the critical voltage). The minimum electrical resistivity occurs near the glass transition temperature (Tg) of HDPE (198 K). It can be concluded that electron tunneling is an important mechanism and a dominant transport process in the HDPE/CB composite. A new model of carbon black dispersion in the matrix was established, and the resistivity was calculated by using percolation and quantum mechanical theories. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Miscibility, crystallization, and mechanical properties of blends of thermosetting polyimide PMR-15 and phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK-C) were examined. With the exception of the 90/10 blend, which has two glass transition peaks, all the blends with PMR-15 less than 90 wt % are miscible in the amorphous state according to DMA results. Addition of PEK-C hindered significantly the crystallization of PMR-15, indicating that there must exist some kind of interaction between molecular chains of PMR-15 and those of PEK-C. The semi-IPN system of PMR-15/PEK-C blends exhibits good toughness. Two distinct microphases, interweaving at the phase boundaries, were found in the PMR-15/PEK-C 60/40 blend. The toughness effect of the blends is discussed in terms of the interface adhesion between the two distinct phases and the domain sizes of the phases. The relation between miscibility and toughness of the blends was investigated. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Miscibility and crystallization behavior of solution-blended poly(ether ether ketone)/polyimide (PEEK/PI) blends were investigated by using DSC, optical microscopy and SAXS methods. Two kinds of PIs, YS-30 and PEI-E, which consist of the same diamine but different dianhydrides, were used in this work. The experimental results show that blends of PEEK/YS-30 are miscible over the entire composition range, as all the blends of different compositions exhibit a single glass transition temperature. The crystallization of PEEK was hindered by YS-30 in PEEK/YS-30 blends, of which the dominant morphology is interlamellar. On the other hand, blends of PEEK/PEI-E are immiscible, and the effect of PEI-E on the crystallization behavior of PEEK is weak. The crystallinity of PEEK in the isothermally crystallized PEEK/YS-30 blend specimens decreases with the increase in PI content. But the crystallinity of PEEK in the annealed samples almost keeps unchanged and reaches its maximum value, which is more than 50%. The spherulitic texture of the blends depends on both the blend composition and the molecular structure of the PIs used.     Notes: Compatibility, morphology, crystalline structure and mechanical properties of the blends of a thermosetting polyimide with thermoplastic polyimides consisting of dianhydrides of different lengths have been studied by the use of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. The results of our research show that the blends change from compatible to semi-compatible when the difference between the length of the dianhydrides of the two components increases. Addition of a thermoplastic polyimide inhibits the crystallization of the thermosetting component. However, this effect decreases with increasing length of the dianhydrides and the distribution of the molecules of the thermoplastic polyimide component changes from interlamellar to interfibrillar. Impact strength and morphology of the fractured surfaces indicate that among the semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPN) obtained the toughening effect of the partially compatible one is the best. The results are discussed in terms of charge transfer interaction between imide group and p-phenylene group.

    Notes: In this paper, the results of a systematic study of carbon black (CB)-filled conducting polymer positive and negative temperature coefficient (PTC/NTC) effects are report. The conductivity of the composites jumps by several orders of magnitude at the critical value of carbon black. This critical value, øc, decreases with the increase of melt index and degree of crystallinity of the polymer. The crystalline lamellae just “modify” the distribution of carbon black and make the dispersion heterogeneous. Radiation cross-linking enhances the PTC intensity and decreases the NTC effect of the materials. The electrical reproducibility of compounds is improved by the cross-linking structure that reduces the freedom of carbon black movement at high temperature. The NTC phenomenon is related to the carbon black coagulation that facilitates electrical conduction at high temperature. The larger the melt index, the more easily carbon black coagulates. A new model was set up to explain the results successfully. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
