    Notes: The surface nano-deformation behavior in metal matrix composite during tensile loadingwas investigated by in-situ atomic force microscope (AFM) observation. The composite materialused was aluminum matrix reinforced with 10 and 20 percent volume fraction of SiC particles. Theaverage size of the reinforcement was 3 μm. Tensile test and in-situ observations were conductedusing a loading device equipped with an AFM. Surface morphologies of the composite specimenswere acquired before the loading and at various stages of the loading. The microstructural damageand the evolution of surface roughness were studied. The effect of volume fraction of the reinforcementon the nano-deformation behavior and damage evolution process of the composite basedon nanoscale in-situ AFM observation will be discussed

    Notes: A method for measuring the stress and strain distribution in the composite materials andresidual stress at the interface in the fiber reinforced composite has been developed. The strains aremeasured using an electron Moiré method and then the stresses are calculated from these strains. Avery fine model grid with frequencies up to 10,000lines/mm can be fabricated using the optical andelectron lithography techniques on the surface of the specimen and an electron beam scan whichspaces are almost same as that of model grid the can be used for master-grid. The difference of theamount of secondary electrons per a primary electron makes Moiré fringes that consists bright anddark parts. Micro-creep deformation and residual strain and stress near the fibers of composite materialswere measured by this method

    Notes: In this work, 800 ppm of Zr4+ dopants were added to Al2O3-5 vol% SiC particle composite. Zr4+ doping led to a weak Al2O3 grain-boundary bonding so that the fracture mode changed from transgranular in undoped composite to intergranular in Zr4+-doped composite. The fracture mode change increased the fracture toughness of the composite. Transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy examinations revealed that the weak grain-boundary bonding in the doped composite was caused by the segregation of Zr4+ and Si4+ ions at the Al2O3 grain boundary.

    Notes: Metal Al particle surfaces were modified by fine γ-Al2O3 grains using a mixture of Al and Al(OH)3 powders, which was pressureless sintered at a temperature of 600°C in vacuum. All the constituents on original Al particle surfaces were transformed into γ-Al2O3 phase after sintering. No dense passive oxide layers on Al particle surfaces were formed even after the modified Al particles were exposed to oxidation environment. The modified Al particles could continuously react with pure water and generate hydrogen at room temperature. The present finding implies that metal Al could become hydrogen-generation material by surface modification.

    Notes: Long crack R-curve of a porous Si3N4 with aligned fibrous grains was investigated, using a chevron-notched beam technique. A crack was constrained to propagate normal to the grain alignment. The crack growth resistance of aligned porous Si3N4 was much larger compared with that of dense Si3N4 ceramics. Microstructure observations showed that pullouts of fibrous grains in aligned porous Si3N4 markedly increased during crack propagation relative to those of dense Si3N4, due to the existence of pores. The efficient grain pullouts in porous Si3N4 increased the bridging stress at the crack wake.

    Notes: The effect of temperature on the reaction of γ-Al2O3-modified Al powders with distilled water was investigated. It was found that by increasing the temperature up to 40°C, the hydrogen generation speed can be enhanced one to two orders of magnitude relative to that at room temperature (18°C). X-ray analyses and transmission electron microscopy observations revealed that the reaction by-product at 40°C is bayerite (Al(OH)3), which is chemically neutral. The present results imply that slightly increasing the temperature is an effective way to get the target hydrogen generation speed.

    Notes: Abstract An experimental study was made on the behavior of a solid surface subjected to an extremely high heat flux similar to that expected during a plasma disruption. An electron beam was used as the heat source to simulate the high heat flux. The beam was defocused in an attempt to give as much uniform heat flux as possible on the test surface. The 5-mm-diameter test pieces were made of 304 stainless steel, aluminum, and zinc. Heat fluxes from 10 to 110 MW/m2 were applied on the test pieces for durations of 90 to 180 msec. Special attention was paid to the measurement of the surface heat flux on the test surface. Comparison between experimental and analytical results on melt layer thickness and evaporation loss is made. An improved thermal analysis code (DAT-K) was developed for the analysis. Agreement between the experimental and analytical results on melt layer thickness is good. For evaporation loss, experimental and analytical results are in fair agreement. Features of the experiments and analysis that lead to the differences in the results are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Fatigue properties and fracture mechanisms were examined for three commercially fabricated aluminium matrix composites containing SiC whiskers (SiCw) and SiC particles (SiCp) using a rotating bending test. The fatigue strengths were over 60% higher for SiCw/A2024 composites than that for the unreinforced rolled material, while for the SiCp/A357 composites, fatigue strengths were also higher than that for the unreinforced reference material. For the SiCp/A356 composites at a volume fraction of 20%, the fatigue strength was slightly higher than that of the unreinforced material. Fractography revealed that the Mode I fatigue crack was initiated by the Stage I mechanism for the SiCw/A2024 and SiCp/A357 composites, while for the SiCp/A356 composite, the fatigue crack initiated at the voids situated beneath the specimen surfaces. On the other hand, the fatigue crack propagated to the whisker/matrix interface following the formation of dimple patterns or the formation of striation patterns for SiCw/A2024 composites, while for the SiCp/A356 and SiCp/A357 composites the fatigue crack propagated in the matrix near the crack origin and striation patterns were found. Near final failure, dimple patterns, initiated at silicon carbide particles, were frequently observed. Mode I fatigue crack initiation and propagation models were proposed for discontinuous fibre-reinforced aluminium composites. It is suggested that the silicon carbide whiskers or particles would have a very significant effect on the fatigue crack initiation and crack propagation near the fatigue limit.

    Notes: Abstract An axisymmetrical fiber-matrix cylindrical model with a circumferential crack in the matrix of finite diameter is formulated within elastostatic scope. The problem is considered by means of integral transforms and a singular integral equation with a dominant generalized Cauchy kernel is obtained. Following the numerical solution technique developed by Erdogan, Gupta and Cook, the singular integral equation is reduced to a system of linear equations. By solving the linear equations, stress intensity factors associated with the crack length and the material properties are calculated and discussed. The solutions presented in this study are found to be general, including the solutions as special cases of the present formulation for a homogeneous solid cylindrical bar and a thick-walled shell with an outer circumferential crack.
