Description:
The Born charging equation predicts that the permeability of a phospholipid bilayer membrane to ions should depend markedly on the dielectric constant of the membrane. Increasing the dielectric constant of an artificial bilayer increases its permeability to perchlorate or thiocyanate by a factor of 1000, to a value comparable to that of mitochondrial membranes.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Dilger, J P -- McLaughlin, S G -- McIntosh, T J -- Simon, S A -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1979 Dec 7;206(4423):1196-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/228394" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
