Description: Gudmundsdottir, A., Oskarsson, G. J., and Sveinbjörnsson, S. 2007. Estimating year-class strength of Icelandic summer-spawning herring on the basis of two survey methods. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 64: 1182–1190. Recruitment indices at age 1 and 2 were constructed for Icelandic summer-spawning herring using data from two inherently different survey methods on their nursery areas for the years 1988–2003. The surveys were a shrimp, bottom-trawl survey and a herring acoustic survey. Indices were compared with the year-class strength at age 2 derived from an assessment model (AMCI) used for the stock. A juvenile index at age 1 from the acoustic survey and at age 2 from the shrimp-trawl survey correlated significantly with the modelled recruitment, although only marginally with each other. One index was not considered markedly better than the other, and both have shortcomings even if the acoustic survey is believed better than the trawl survey for quantifying juvenile herring. The recruitment index at age 1 derived from the acoustic survey can be improved as an indicator of recruitment if that survey were to be extended to cover the nursery areas off western and southeastern Iceland, and the same areas covered each year.

Description: Barbaro, A., Einarsson, B., Birnir, B., Sigurðsson, S., Valdimarsson, H., Pálsson, Ó. K., Sveinbjörnsson, S., and Sigurðsson, Þ. 2009. Modelling and simulations of the migration of pelagic fish. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 826–838. We applied an interacting particle model to the Icelandic capelin stock to reproduce the spawning migration route for three different years, successfully predicting the route for 2008. Using available temperature data and approximated currents, and without using artificial forcing terms or a homing instinct, our model was able to reproduce the observed migration routes from all 3 years. By a sensitivity analysis, we identified oceanic temperature and the balance between the influence of interaction among particles and the particles' response to temperature as the control parameters most significant in determining the migration route. One significant contribution of this paper is the inclusion of orders of magnitude more particles than similar models, which affects the global behaviour of the model by propagating information about surrounding temperature through the school more efficiently. To maintain the same dynamics between different simulations, we argue a linear relationship between the time-step, radii of interactions, and the spatial resolution, and we argue that these scale as N−1/2, where N is the number of particles.

Description: Pálsson, Ó. K., Gislason, A., Guðfinnsson,  H. G., Gunnarsson, B., Ólafsdóttir, S. R., Petursdottir, H., Sveinbjörnsson, S., Thorisson, K., and Valdimarsson, H. 2012. Ecosystem structure in the Iceland Sea and recent changes to the capelin (Mallotus villosus) population. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: . The objective of the Iceland Sea Ecosystem Project was to analyse principal ecosystem patterns, including the life history of capelin. Ten surveys were conducted for this purpose between 2006 and 2008, and hydrographic data from 1970 to 2011 were analysed. Long-term temporal patterns indicate an increase in the temperature of surface and intermediate waters during recent years in the Iceland Sea. The phytoplankton consisted mainly of diatoms in spring, with flagellates and dinoflagellates appearing later in the year. Zooplankton and fish were dominated by a few species. In late summer, the pelagic foodweb ranged between trophic levels 2.4 and 3.6. Trends in nutrients and primary production showed a clear seasonal pattern with a spring bloom in late May, followed by a peak in secondary production in July/August. The spatial structure of the lower ecosystem levels in summer was stable across the 3 years, determined mainly by the structure of the water masses. The pelagic fish fauna consisted primarily of adult pelagic fish and transient numbers of larval species. The spatial pattern of capelin indicated northward displacement of 0-group capelin and westward displacement of older capelin in recent years. The annual biomass was estimated at 3.8 million tonnes of phytoplankton, ∼21 million tonnes of zooplankton, and 1.0 million tonnes of fish.
