Crystals of 9-ethyl-3-vinylcarbazole(I) were easily polymerized to high polymer under mechanical shear stress and photoirradiation without initiator. The degree of polymerization was higher for tribo- than for photopolymerization. It was concluded that the mechanism of polymerization was cationic for both polymerizations on the basis of additive effects. The polymerization behavior depended on the recrystallizing solvents. Ethanol crystals are less sensitive to tribo- and photo-polymerization than those of n-hexane or benzene. X-ray diffraction patterns of I also differed, depending on the recrystallizing solvents. The reactive crystals were in a high energy state, as revealed by DSC analysis. Similarities of photo- and tribopolymerization and comparative studies of tribopolymerization with triboluminescence of I indicated that polymerizations are likely to be induced by an identical reactive intermediate tentatively considered as a zwitterionic species.
