Abstract X-ray induced barley mutants and their prototype Hannchen were tested for their behaviour in evolutionary breeding (the term is used to indicate the application of population genetics to plant breeding). It was shown that only the “better” mutants survive. Eventually only the fittest mutants and recombinants will comprise the population.
