Notes: We present a theoretical study of a recently proposed class of quantum interference transistors that utilize quantum interference effects in ultrasmall semiconductor T structures. Our analysis reveals that the attractive features of these transistors are the very low power-delay product and multifunctionality; whereas the major drawbacks are extreme sensitivity of the device characteristics to slight structural variations, low gain, and low extrinsic switching speed in digital circuits caused by a large resistance-capacitance (RC) time constant arising from an inherently low current-carrying capability. The low switching speed of the transistors can however be improved dramatically by switching the device optically rather than electronically, using virtual charge polarization caused by optical excitation. This mode of switching (which is possible because of the small value of the threshold voltage) eliminates the RC time constant limitation on the switching time and results in an ultrafast optoelectronic switch.

Notes: The statistical representation of a spray as a finite point process is investigated. One objective is to develop a better understanding of how single-point statistical information contained in descriptions such as the droplet distribution function (ddf), relates to the probability density functions (pdfs) associated with the droplets themselves. Single-point statistical information contained in the droplet distribution function (ddf) is shown to be related to a sequence of single surrogate-droplet pdfs, which are in general different from the physical single-droplet pdfs. It is shown that the ddf contains less information than the fundamental single-point statistical representation of the spray, which is also described. The analysis shows which events associated with the ensemble of spray droplets can be characterized by the ddf, and which cannot. The implications of these findings for the ddf approach to spray modeling are discussed. The results of this study also have important consequences for the initialization and evolution of direct numerical simulations (DNS) of multiphase flows, which are usually initialized on the basis of single-point statistics such as the droplet number density in physical space. If multiphase DNS are initialized in this way, this implies that even the initial representation contains certain implicit assumptions concerning the complete ensemble of realizations, which are invalid for general multiphase flows. Also the evolution of a DNS initialized in this manner is shown to be valid only if an as yet unproven commutation hypothesis holds true. Therefore, it is questionable to what extent DNS that are initialized in this manner constitute a direct simulation of the physical droplets. Implications of these findings for large eddy simulations of multiphase flows are also discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The theoretical foundations of a statistical spray modeling approach based on the droplet distribution function (ddf), which was originally proposed by Williams [Phys. Fluids 1, 541 (1958)], are established. The equation governing the ddf evolution is derived using an alternative approach. The unclosed terms in the ddf evolution equation are precisely defined, and the regime of applicability of current models is discussed. The theory of point processes is used to rigorously establish the existence of a disintegration of the ddf in terms of a spray intensity, which is the density of expected number of spray droplets in physical space, and the joint probability density function (jpdf) of velocity and radius conditional on physical location. Evolution equations for the spray intensity and the conditional jpdf of velocity and radius are derived. The intensity evolution equation contains a sink term corresponding to droplet vaporization, hitherto missing in previous derivations of this equation. This sink term is essential in order to correctly represent the vaporization phenomenon. Problems with numerical convergence of computed solutions to the ddf evolution are discussed, and criteria for establishing convergence are proposed. The study also shows how quantities predicted by ddf-based spray models can be compared to experimental measurements. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary The cross combination involving 14 male-sterile lines in rice, when crossed with different maintainers, showed fertility restoration in certain combinations. When F2 segregating populations were classified based on spikelet fertility, fertility restoration was shown to be governed by 3∶1, 9∶3∶3∶1, and 12∶3∶1, due to allelic differences. This indicated that the cytosterility of the same group showed monogenic fertility restoration, whereas crossing plants belonging to different cystosterile groups showed a digenic pattern of segregation.

Notes: Summary Heritability estimates of five quantitative characters, namely, yield, girth, girth increment, virgin bark and renewed bark thickness, of the breeding Phase III Hevea families have been obtained by variance component analyses. In general, the combined heritability estimates for various characters were low to moderate. The heritabilities of these characters based on female variance components, however, were high, suggesting that considerable improvement of each of the characters could be achieved in properly designed experiments. Estimates of heritability for average yields (Range: 0.11–0.34) over different years showed that the first three years' yield was adequate for predicting estimates of genetic variance for the average of five years' yield. Correlation studies on yield with other characters indicated considerable influence of environment, with genetic correlations accounting for about 0.07 to 0.36 in the characters studied. Expected direct response to selection in yield and correlated response in yield to selection for girth at opening and virgin bark thickness have been calculated using three arbitrary values of selection intensity. The efficiency of the correlated response was found to be approximately half that of the direct response. However, the indirect selection for yield using virgin bark thickness appeared to be more favourable than that using the girth at opening favoured by earlier workers.
