Summary As a contribution to the deformation analysis of impacted structures, the dynamical behaviour of transversely struck anisotropic plates is investigated to get detailed information on the contact interaction between the colliding bodies, on the maximum loading of the structure and on the propagation of elastic waves. In practice, plates with orthogonal anisotropy are of special importance, hence a simplified theory of impact on this type of plates is developed, which allows the evaluation of significant loading values. The plate deflection below the impact point as a critical loading point is found to be proportional to the time integral of the impact force during the early contact interaction. With this connection and other kinetical relations a nonlinear differential equation for the impact force is derived. Thus, numerically the temporal course of the impact force can be calculated for various material combinations, impact masses and velocities. On account of the intensive retarding effect during the collision, the maximum impact force amounts to some hundreds of the impact mass gravity and causes high local bending moments. Knowing the impact forces, we can also calculate the plate deflection and curvature during the deformation in a simple way.
