Notes: Contents Numerical analysis of electromagnetic field distribution in linear motion tubular electric motor has been performed with the aid of finite element method. Two Fortran programmes for the solution of DBBF and BF large linear symmetric equation systems have been developed for purposes of this analysis. A new iterative algorithm, taking into account iron nonlinearity and periodicity conditions, has been introduced. Final results of the analysis in the form of induction diagrammes and motor driving force and directly useful for motor designers.

Notes: The finite element solution of various partial differential equations leads to large linear equation systems, which may have a DBBF (double bounded band form) coefficient matrix, if periodicity conditions are taken into account. An efficient Fortran program solving such equation systems, developed for Control Data computers from the Cyber 70/170 series, utilizes the original block-indexed approach to reduce input-output time in communication with disc memory. Program performance is presented in some detail and quantitative comparison with other possible algorithms is carried out. An appendix lists the complete program.

Notes: The presented solver uses the Crout L-U decomposition method. Disk memory space requirements are reduced to an absolute minimum and disk input-output is spectacularly limited. Very extensive pivoting improves numerical accuracy and stability. Experimental test runs prove the overall efficiency of the solver.

Notes: This paper presents an algorithm and corresponding FORTRAN program for the solution of unsymmetric banded linear equation systems. The algorithm is based on the Crout method. A special technique, called double windowing, enables the solution of very large equation systems with a total equation number reaching 30,000 and a full bandwidth in excess of 1,000. Special attention was devoted to minimization of peripheral processor time (communication with backing disc memory). An appendix lists the complete program for Cyber series computers (CDC).

Notes: A new method of pivoting applicable to banded unsymmetric linear equation systems has been introduced. It limits the fill-in and preserves the basic structure. Two solvers, using the new pivoting strategy, have been developed. Both solvers have been written in the C language for two popular UNIX platforms (PC486 and the Sun Sparc5). Details of the solvers' implementations are described comprehensively. Quantitative results of the test runs on both platforms are presented. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
