Notes: Glutamic acid dehydrogenase (GDH) activity was measured in linseed Linum usitatissimum ev. SH-1 at different growth intervals under normal and long photoperiodic conditions. In ungerminated seeds a low activity of GDH was recorded which increased rapidly during germination and thereafter decreased to a level when no GDH activity could be detected at 47 days of growth. An increase in its activity was recorded at 67, 87 and 107 days. Longer photoperiod (continuous light) increased the activity in roots markedly as compared to shorter photoperiods (normal days).

Notes: The present investigation was carried out to study the transamination reaction in relation to floral differentiation in wheat (cv. NP 876) under three photoperiodic conditions. Three selected aminotransferases namely glutamic-glyoxylate, glutamic-pyruvate, and alanine-glyoxylate were studied in the top young leaves at various growth and developmental stages. The activity of all the three systems increased progressively during the vegetative phase till the plants produced reproductive buds. When flower primordia started differentiating, there was a sharp decrease in the aminotransferase activity followed by an increase during anthesis period. Photoperiodic treatments clearly show that even when the vegetative period of the plant is shortened considerably by long day or extended by short day, the aminotransferase activity remains closely associated with different developmental processes.

Notes: Summary Thin-layer chromatography technique was employed to separate the amino acids present in the petroprotein hydrolysate obtained under different experimental conditions. The hydrolysates were studied both in one-dimensional and two-dimensional solvent system(s). Eighteen amino acids were identified in the acid and alkali hydrolysate of petro-protein concentrate.

Notes: Summary During antifungal screening of products from higher plants 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine (caffeine), isolated from the seeds ofCoffea arabica, was found to exhibit strong fungitoxicity. The fungicidal ability of caffeine has been tested in vitro on 4 fish pathogenic species of Saprolegniaceae. The applicability of this chemical has also been tested by conducting tolerance tests, usingColisa lalia andPuntius sophore as test-fishes. The present studies have established that caffeine is a potential fish fungicide.

Notes: Abstract During the course of present investigations 43 isolates representing 5 genera of Saprolegniaceous fungi were isolated from 19 different species of freshwater fishes. The parasitic abilities of these isolates have been demonstrated by conducting artificial inoculation experiments under laboratory conditions using the species of Puntius and Colisa as test fishes.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The distribution of aquatic fungi in six waters of Gorakhpur, ranging in pH from 5.6–8.8 has been studied from April 1963 to March 1964. The thirty species collected during this study belong to Blastocladiales, Saprolegniales, Lagenidiales and Peronosporales. These have been placed in three groups: acid, alkaline and neutral according their tolerance of hydrogen-ion concentration. A distinct seasonal variation in occurrence of these species has been noted and though the individual periodicity patterns vary, the low temperatures of winter months (about 18°C) are most suitable for growth of most of the species.

Notes: Abstract The present paper deals with the histopathological studies of galls of Ustilago hordei (Pers.) on Hordeum vulgare L. The gall formation in the present case is the result of both hyperplastic and hypertrophic activities of the infected host cells. Also the gall formation by U. hordei on. H. vulgare is being reported for the first time through present. communication.
