Notes: Abstract A preliminary result employing neutron activation tomography in the study of the diffusion of a preservative in a sample of Scots pine is presented. The ability to determine the spatial distribution of elements within the wood without recourse to destructive sectioning makes this a better technique than others currently available.

Notes: Abstract Instrumental neutron activation analysis has been used to determine the concentration of a range of elements in hair and blood samples, separated into erythrocytes and plasma, obtained from two groups of women, senile demented (9) and depressives (16), and their respective controls (17 and 9). The results suggest that the senile dementia group has significantly higher Al concentrations in erythrocytes and hair relative to the controls but no significant correlation between the aluminium content of hair and that of blood exists. Further, Zn concentrations determined in the erythrocytes and plasma of these subjects were lower compared to the control values. Vanadium levels above our detection limit for the element were found in seven cases out of a total of sixteen in the depressive group. Vanadium was also found to be at higher concentration in the hair of the depressive group compared to the controls. Again no significant correlation was found to exist between the concentration of vanadium in hair and in erythrocyte sample for these seven subjects.

Notes: Abstract A study was undertaken to determine the concentration of selenium in whole blood, erythrocytes and plasma in samples obtained from three groups (each group consisting of one male and one female subject) given as a supplement a commercial product containing the element, together with vitamins A, C and E. Blood samples were obtained on one-day-a-week basis from each group, over a period of 75 days, both in the morning and in the afternoon, as part of a gastric function investigation, in which the subjects were given orange juice after fasting. Results indicate that the level of selenium in whole blood and its components increases with dose and time and that concentrations of the element are maintained for at least 45 days following cessation of supplementation. The influence of the supplement on some electrolytes such as Na, Cl, Br and Rb was also investigated.

Notes: Abstract When a beam of radiation is used as a probe in order to study the elemental composition of an object, the factors involved in obtaining maximum detection sensitivity include target homogeneity, beam uniformity and the solid angle subtended between target and detector. Here we have investigated, both theoretically and experimentally, the significance of these factors in an experimental facility for ‘in-vitro’ prompt gamma-ray neutron activation analysis and an arrangement used in ‘in-vivo’ activation analysis. The correction factor to the solid angle, to account for non-uniformity, and the optimisation of reaction rate and solid angle are considered.

Notes: Abstract In this preliminary study, scalp hair samples from 36 individuals resident in Sofia, Bulgaria, were analysed and Ag, Al, As, Au, Ba, Br, Ca, Cd, Ce, Cl, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, F, Fe, Hg, I, K, La, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Rb, S, Sb, Sc, Se, Sn, Sr, Ti, V, W, and Zn were determined. Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) methods were used. Three washing procedures.: distilled-deionised water; acidacetone-water; and Triton X-100 detergent-water, showed a variable elemental change strongly dependent on the procedure used. More than 18 elements (Al, As, Ba, Ca, Ce, Cl, Co, Cs, F, Fe, I, K, La, Mo, Na, Ni, Sb, Sc, Sr and V) were easily removed by water-washing. Triton X-100 detergent was more effective in removing Ag, As, Au, Cl, Cs, K, Na and Rb; but not Hg. Only S and Zn were strongly incorporated in the hair structure (less than 10% being removable by any washing technique). There is no significant age correlation with any element between the various hair treatment groups. Elevated cadmium levels were found in the hair of smokers (0.711–4.913 μg/g Cd) compared with nonsmokers (0.568–2.681 μg/g Cd). Comparison of the elemental data for distilled water-washed hair and studies from Oxford, England and Hastings, and Hastings, New Zealand (using the same INAA method) revealed interesting variations dependent on local industrial and nutritional factors.

Notes: Abstract We generalize the newtonian expressions for the orbital angular momentum of a two-body system, and for the spin of each body, by introducing corresponding definitions in the post-Newtonian approximation of fully conservative theories of gravity. Using this definition of the spin and assuming that the bodies rotate rigidly and that the equations of motion are Hamiltonian, we show that in fully conservative theories of gravity the spin of each body undergoes a relativistic precession about the direction of the orbital angular momentum, as a consequence of the local equations of motion for a perfect fluid.

Notes: Abstract The uniform motion of the center of mass of a charged, conducting fluid, in the presence of an electromagnetic field, is derived in the first post-Newtonian approximation of general relativity. Also the source's far field metric tensor is determined, and it is expressed in terms of parameters known as three-dimensional volume integrals over its interior. These results for the above system permit the physical identification, to post-Newtonian accuracy, of the integration constants and the coordinate systems involved in the Schwarzschild and the Kerr metric tensors.
