Notes: Abstract Packed bed heat exchangers for thermal energy storage systems are investigated by means of two phase heat transfer models. The paper is mainly aimed at deriving analytical solutions to the thermal balance equations relevant to different kinds of packed beds, taking into account the roles played by heat capacity and conduction effects. The results are shortly discussed and some graphs are shown for situations typical of various operational modes.

Notes: Summary Following a procedure which is typical of linear (neutron) transport theory, a multigroup approach is proposed for the non-linear extended Boltzmann equation in the presence of removal, a background medium, an external source and an external force field. The relevant multigroup equations, corresponding to a discretization of the speed variable only, are derived and discussed, especially in connection with the so-called semi-discrete models recently introduced in kinetic theory.

Notes: Summary Space-dependent evolution problems arising in particle transport theory are analytically studied via a systematic application of the Boltzmann equation. Some explicit solutions, that can improve our knowledge of the spatial effects in such a class of problems, are constructed and briefly commented on a physical ground.

Notes: The stabilizing effects of the addition of short-range collisions to a partially ionized plasma are investigated through a recently developed numerical Laplace transform inversion algorithm. The technique is demonstrated using a two-stream equilibrium distribution and double Maxwellian equilibrium distributions. The regions of plasma stability obtained in previous studies are verified.

Notes: The transport of N gases in a background host medium can be described, in the case of constant collision frequencies, by a set of N ordinary differential equations of the Lotka–Volterra type. It is shown that for N=3 such a set exhibits chaotic dynamics generated by a sequence of period-doubling bifurcations starting from a supercritical Hopf bifurcation of the three-species equilibrium state.

Notes: The dynamics of a mixture of N rarefied gases is studied by analyzing the set of nonlinear continuity equations for the number densities. Removal and regeneration effects are also taken into account. Various physical situations are considered, corresponding to N=2 and N=3. The relevant diagrams (trajectories in the phase space and curves of the single densities as functions of time) are reported and briefly discussed on physical grounds.

Notes: After reviewing the complete Lie group for the full Boltzmann equation, it is shown that projective transformations play a special role in the general case, and the class of invariant solutions giving rise to homoenergetic affine flows is presented. Homoenergetic affine flows in the two-dimensional case [potential U(r)∝r−2] are considered in detail: It is shown that the general solution of this problem can be essentially simplified by projective transformations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
