Notes: Instrumental drift in the surface forces apparatus (SFA) has been carefully scrutinized. A diversity of different contributions with different characteristic time constants could be distinguished. The face seal of the functional attachment was identified as a potential weak point in the mechanical loop of the instrument. We compared drift in three different design variants and found that the drift rate may vary over four orders of magnitude. We believe that the presented results are applicable to a number of different SFA types. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Methylene blue adsorption from aqueous solution is widely used for the determination of the specific surface area of mica. In this procedure, knowledge of the space requirement for each ion-exchange-reacted methylene blue (MB) molecule is a prerequisite for a precise determination of the specific surface area. There is, however, some disagreement about the correct value due to the unknown orientation of the adsorbed MB molecules. In the present study the electronic structure and orientation of MB on muscovite mica is investigated with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the synchrotron-based technique of near edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. It was found that the MB molecules are tilted, with their largest face inclined at 65–70° with respect to the surface. This value disagrees with common a priori assumptions that MB lies flat on the surface, i.e., the specific surface area of mica is overestimated in many cases by a significant factor. The results, however, agree with a recent study proposing an apparent surface area of 66 A(ring)2 for MB molecules on mica. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) films with nominal thicknesses of 1–4 unit cells were grown by pulsed laser deposition using (PrxY1−x)Ba2Cu3O7−δ [(PrxY1−x)BCO] (1≥x≥0) as buffer layers and cap layers. The films of 1 unit cell thick were superconducting for all the x values while Tc increased when x was reduced. For adjacent layers of (Pr0.6Y0.4)BCO which is semiconducting, a Tc of 43 K and Jc of 2×106 A/cm2 for B(parallel)ab and 4×105 A/cm2 for B⊥ab at B=7 T and 4.2 K were obtained in a one-unit cell thick YBCO layer. The Jc values of a few unit cell thick YBCO layers nearly approached that of thick YBCO films. The results suggest the absence of significant weak-link effects in these films.

Notes: Transport critical currents and magnetization behavior in c-axis textured Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor ribbons have been studied. The highly oriented layer structure was achieved by a combination processing of spray coating on silver foil, cold rolling, and partial melting. Transport Jc values as high as 2.3×105 A/cm2 at 4.2 K, H=8 T (H⊥ab) have been obtained. The high Jc at H≥5 T is maintained to temperatures near 20 K but it vanishes completely at or above ∼30 K, thus showing the limitation in useful, high-field operating temperatures for the Bi-system superconductors. A comparison of Jc (transport) and Jc (magnetization) indicates that the size scale of the circulating supercurrent loop in the Bean model nearly corresponds to the whole sample dimension rather than the orders-of-magnitude-smaller grain size. This demonstrates that the a-b grain boundaries in the melt-processed ribbons are not weakly coupled. The time decay of magnetization has also been studied.

Notes: A simple processing technique for preparation of c-axis-oriented Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thin films is reported. ∼3000-A(ring)-thick superconductor films on silver substrate have been obtained by heavy cold rolling and partial melt processing of the superconductor-silver composite structure. The films are highly textured due to the interface-induced, layer-like growth of the superconducting phase, and are essentially free of weak links. They exhibited Tc∼80 K and Jc (4.2 K) ∼104–105 A/cm2. This technique, which does not require epitaxial growth from single-crystal substrates, may be suitable for high-speed, low-cost production of large-area thin films, and points to other novel thin-film processing possibilities.

Notes: Abstract Micrometer-scale patterns of a defined surface chemistry and structure were produced on both ultraflat Au(1 1 1) and on gold-coated monocrystalline silicon surfaces by a method combining microcontact printing, wet chemical etching and the replacement of etch-resist self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) by functionalized or reactive SAMs. Key steps in this methodology were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ellipsometry and contact angle measurements. The covalent immobilization of (functional) biological systems on these surfaces was tested using an N-hydroxysuccinimide ester ω-functionalized disulphide (DSU), which covalently binds primary amines without the need for further activation steps. Atomic force microscope images of native collagen V single molecules immobilized on these patterned surfaces revealed both high spatial resolution and strong attachment to the monolayer/gold surface. Microcontact printing of DSU is shown to be feasible on specially prepared, ultraflat Au(1 1 1) surfaces providing a valuable tool for scanning probe experiments with biomolecules. The retention of enzymatic activity upon immobilization of protein was demonstrated for the case of horseradish peroxidase. The described approach can thus be used to confine biological activity to predetermined sites on microstructured gold/silicon devices – an important capability in biomedical and biomolecular research. © 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract The biocompatibility of commercially pure titanium and its alloys is closely related to their surface properties, with both the composition of the protecting oxide film and the surface topography playing an important role. Surfaces of commercially pure titanium and of the two alloys Ti–6Al–7Nb and Ti–6Al–4V (wt %) have been investigated following three different pretreatments: polishing, nitric acid passivation and pickling in nitric acid–hydrogen fluoride. Nitric acid treatment is found to substantially reduce the concentration of surface contaminants present after polishing. The natural 4–6 nm thick oxide layer on commercially pure titanium is composed of titanium oxide in different oxidation states (TiO2, Ti2O3 and TiO), while for the alloys, aluminium and niobium or vanadium are additionally present in oxidized form (Al2O3, Nb2O5 or V-oxides). The concentrations of the alloying elements at the surface are shown to be strongly dependent on the pretreatment process. While pickling increases the surface roughness of both commercially pure titanium and the alloys, different mechanisms appear to be involved. In the case of commercially pure titanium, the dissolution rate depends on grain orientation, whereas in the case of the two alloys, selective α-phase dissolution and enrichment of the β-phase appears to occur. © 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract The aim of the present study was to characterize the surface morphology, microstructure and the chemical composition of anodic spark-converted titanium surfaces. The coatings were prepared in an electrochemical cell by the anodic spark deposition technique in an aqueous solution of CaH2PO4)2. The coatings were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The properties of the coatings are described in terms of morphology.
