    Battery life test using reconditioning (1977)

    Description: A discussion is presented on nickel cadmium battery life tests using reconditioning and some comparative tests not using reconditioning. The discussion is aimed at the program application part of the testing. The goals of the program were to get an increased utilization out of the battery system in geosynchronous orbit. An attempt was made to push the depth of discharge operation up around 80 to 85 percent and the intent with the reconditioning program was to extend this type of utilization out towards a 10-year life and attune the voltage regulation.

    Description: The workshop was attended by representatives from industry and government. The requirements for energy storage and the plans for battery development were reviewed. The workshop followed a debate format, with the objective of recommending improvements to the development plans presented by NASA and the Air Force. The issues addressed were: (1) significant technology deficiencies which can be identified; (2) adequacy of current and proposed programs to resolve the technology deficiencies identified; (3) additional tasks which should be undertaken, including benefits and timing; and (4) lowest priority items in the presently planned program, both in content and in timing.

    Description: Built-in safety mechanism for tractor-trailer "fifth-wheel" coupling keeps rig together in case kingpin failure. Modified coupling utilizes all standard components, such as two wear plates, kingpin, and kingpin latch. It is modified by adding semicircular lip to top wear plate, matching semicircular slot to bottom wear plate, and two latching stop mechanisms.

    Fifth wheel (1976)

    Description: An improved fifth wheel for a tractor trailer rig, characterized by a first subassembly including a wear plate was developed and modified to be mounted on a downwardly facing surface of a trailer. A king pin projected normally therefrom, and a second subassembly is adapted to be pivotally mounted on an upwardly facing surface of a tractor. The king pin is brought into contiguous relation with the first sub assembly. A receiver for capturing the king pin is included along with a safety means responsive to a failure of the king pin or its latching mechanism for joining the first subassembly with the second subassembly.
