Description / Table of Contents: Contents We present a new approach to reduce the controller design for general nonlinear plants to Linear parameter-varying systems (LPV-systems). Therefore we model a class of nonlinear systems as LPV system via a nonlinear state-transformation. This practise allows us to use LPV-controller design methods. In this article we apply Self-scheduled H ∞ -control. The proposed conception will be demonstrated on an example.

Notes: Abstract The p53 gene product is part of a pathway regulating growth arrest at the G1 checkpoint of the cell cycle. Mutation of other components of this pathway, including the products of the ataxia telangiectasia (AT), GADD45, mdm2, and p21WAF1/CIP1 genes may have effects comparable to mutations in the p53 gene. The GADD45 gene is induced by ionizing radiation and several DNA-damaging xenobiotics. Induction requires the binding of wild-type p53 to an evoulutionarily highly conserved putative intronic p53 binding site in intron 3 of GADD45. We recently analyzed the entire coding region of the p53 gene in primary breast cancers of Midwestern white women and found 21 mutations among 53 tumors (39,6%). We now have shown by direct sequencing that there are no mutations in the intronic p53 binding site of the GADD45 gene in any of the 53 primary breast cancers and no mutations in the entire coding region of the GADD45 gene in a subset of 26 consecutive tumors (12 with p53 mutation and 14 without p53 mutation). The only sequence variation detected was a common polymorphism in intron 3. The absence of mutations in the GADD45 gene, including the putative p53-binding intronic site, suggests that this gene is not a frequent target of mutations in breast cancer. Although mutations of the p53 gene have been studied in a wide spectrum of human cancers, GADD45 has not been examined in any tumor or cell line to the best of our knowledge. Our results raise the possibility that mutation of the GADD45 gene alone is not functionally equivalent to loss of wild-type p53 activity.

Notes: Abstract Most estimates of germ-line mosaicism have been derived from families in which there has been transmission of a mutated allele to two or more children by an unaffected individual. Previously, analyses for somatic mosaicism detected five such individuals by PCR-based sequencing and haplotype analysis at a sensitivity of approximately 1 mutant per 10 wild-type alleles. To determine whether mutations that occur later in embryogenesis also give rise to somatic mosaicism, we analyzed leukocyte DNA from 17 individuals in whom a mutation in the factor IX gene was known to have originated. Methods capable of detecting 1 mutant allele in 100–10 000 were utilized, and no further examples of somatic mosaicism were detected. If confirmed by future studies, the paucity of somatic mosaicism with mutant:wild-type allele frequencies ranging from 1:10 to 1:1000 (relative to the 11% of somatic mosaicism detected with mutant:wild-type allele frequencies of 1:1 to 1:10) may reflect a higher mutation rate and/or germ-line lineage allocation very early in embryogenesis.

Notes: Abstract The effects of a tandem set of large eddy breakup (LEBU) devices on the diffusion of drag-reducing polymer solution and of water injected into a turbulent boundary layer flow have been studied. Laser Doppler velocimeter measurements were taken in the LEBU modified boundary layer with and without polymer injection. A laser-induced fluorescence technique was used to examine the development of concentration profiles of the injected fluids with increasing distance from the injection slot for a range of injection rates. The diffusion rate of water, a passive contaminant, was diminished by the LEBU devices over a distance of only 10 to 15 boundary layer thicknesses before returning to the case of an unmodified flow; whereas the devices did have a major effect on the diffusion of polymer over the entire streamwise distance studied compared to the case of an unmodified flow. Large reductions of turbulent normal and shear stresses were observed downstream of the devices, especially with polymer injection.

Notes: Abstract NH3 volatilization from surface-applied urea, diammonium phosphate (DAP), and calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) was measured with chambers through which air was drawn continuously. Two sandy soils and two sandy loam soils, which had been treated with and without time for the last 25 years, were used for the experiments. The accumulated NH3 loss from CAN applied to an unlimed sandy soil was linearly related to time. For the other treatments the accumulated loss was exponentially related to time. The NH3 loss was exponentially related to the maximum soil pH of the fertilizer-amended soil, and was inversely related to the content of exchangeable H+. Due to the low cation exchange capacity of these light-textured soils the NH3 loss was not reduced as the soil CEC increased. The maximum pH after soil amendment was related to soil pH. Therefore, a model is proposed that relates the NH3 loss solely to fertilizers and soil pH. The NH3 loss was less than 5% from CAN, about 20% from DAP, and about 30% from urea, with the insignificant loss from urea applied to the unlimed sandy soil excluded. The NH3 loss from surface-applied DAP was related to the air flow rate and a transfer coefficient (K a) was estimated. K a increased exponentially with the flow rate. At a flow rate above 3.9 liters min−1 (20 volume exchanges min−1) no further increase was seen.

Notes: Abstract Methane (CH4) emissions from stored slurry were successfully measured by a micrometeorological mass balance technique. Emissions during autumn to late winter ranged from 2 to 100kgCH4-Cha–1day–1. Diurnal variations of CH4 emissions were investigated by measuring emissions at several times during the day, correlated with slurry temperatures at 10cm depth and successfully modelled with the Arrhenius equation.

Notes: Summary Knowledge of the contribution of NH3 to the total deposition of N in rural areas is sparse, because the determination of NH3 deposition is costly and labour-intensive. A simple biomonitor consisting of barley plants grown in pots with an inert growth medium is therefore proposed for estimating total N deposition, including NH3. The rise in total N of the plant-soil system reflects the deposition. The biomonitor was tested near a dairy farm. Different N contents in the green biomass reflected differences in deposition, and the deposition correlated very well with NH3 levels in the area and in two background stations. The biomonitors were placed above the crop, the measurements thus representing total N at the edge of a plant community. In 1 month the deposition in the NH3 plume was 8 kg N ha−1.
