Notes: Summary The sequence alignment algorithms of Needleman and Wunsch (1970) and Sellers (1974) are compared. Although the former maximizes similarity and the latter minimizes differences, the two procedures are proven to be equivalent. The equivalence relations necessary for each procedure to give the same result are: 1, the weight assigned to gaps in the Sellers algorithm exceed that in the Needleman-Wunsch algorithm by exactly half the length of the gap times the maximum match value; and 2, for any pair of aligned elements, the degree of similarity assigned by the Needleman-Wunsch algorithm plus the degree of dissimilarity assigned by the Sellers algorithm equal a constant. The utility of the algorithms is independent of the nature of the elements in the sequence and could include anything from geological sequences to the amino acid sequences of proteins. Examples are provided using known nucleotide sequences, one of which shows two sequences to be analogous rather than homologous.

Notes: Sharp dips which are observed in inelastic thermal diffuse γ-ray scattering intensities, and which move rigidly when the crystal is rotated, are attributed to a γ-ray Kikuchi effect. Some geometrical aspects of the effect are explored using the (Δ2θ,Δω) approach recently developed by Mathieson [Acta Cryst. (1982), A38, 378-387] for disecting a Bragg reflexion. In particular, it is shown that observation of the effect should not be very sensitive to angular divergence of the incident γ-ray beam, but should depend on the effective source size, the angular resolution of the detector and on basic crystal properties such as size, absorption coefficient and mosaicity. Some useful general results for coordinate transformations between reciprocal space and (Δ2θ,Δω) space are also presented.

Notes: The American Landsat earth resource series of satellites is continuously collecting large quantities of data. The extraction of urban growth information in the United Kingdom from these data could be of benefit to planners. This paper is an attempt to describe the current situation in this area of interest. After an introduction to remote sensing and Landsat, the type of equipment needed to extract this information by automation is described. The value of such information and the present potential of Landsat data are discussed. Finally, the importance of incorporating this information into an efficient data base is emphasised.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉RésuméLes satellites américains Landsat, consacrés à l'inventaire des ressources terrestres, emmagasinent en continu de grandes masses de données. Notes: Measurements of the Hall coefficient R H have been made as a function of temperature between 4 and 100 K for single-crystal and polycrystal α-U and α-phase U-Mo alloys containing 0.6, 3, and 7 at % Mo. A strong temperature dependence for R H, leading to a change in its sign for the single-crystal sample, is found for the uranium below 45 K. Alloying with Mo reduces the temperature dependence of R H and that for the 7 at % Mo alloy is temperature independent. The anomalous transport behavior for the uranium is linked with the anomalies which have been observed in many of the physical properties of uranium around 45 K, and the possibility that these are due to a change in Fermi surface topology resulting from a periodic lattice distortion associated with charge density wave formation is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The superconducting transition temperature for a number of A15 compounds has been determined as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to 25 kbar. The observed pressure dependences are compared with the predictions of a number of correlations between Tc and volume derived from zero-pressure data. The limitations of the theoretical models used to calculate Tc for the transition metals and their alloys when applied to a description of the pressure dependence are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the low-temperature thermal expansion coefficient, α, of Ni-Cr alloys close to the critical concentration, x c, for the ferromagnetic regime may be represented in the form α= A+BT+CT 3. The value for A increases in magnitude as x c is approached and abruptly changes sign at x c, being positive in the paramagnetic alloys and negative in the ferromagnetic alloys. Further measurements are reported that support a qualitative description proposed to account for the sign change in A, which is based upon a correspondence between the magnetovolume and the magnitude of the ordered magnetic moment and the moment fluctuation associated with the magnetic transition.

Notes: Abstract The compounds Fe3−x Mn x Si exhibit a complex magnetic behavior for 0.6⩽x⩽1.75 involving ferromagnetic ordering followed by a reordering at lower temperature. Measurements of the thermal expansion α and the specific heat C p show only a weak anomaly at the Curie temperature, T C, whereas a large, relatively sharp peak occurs at the magnetic reordering temperature, T R. Thermal expansion measurements for the Fe2.2Mn0.8Si compound made about T R are indicative of long-range ordering that can be suppressed in an applied field of ∼0.4T. Magnetization measurements show that low fields, 1–2 mT, strongly influence the bulk magnetization. Irreversible magnetization behavior, similar to that in spin-glass systems, is displayed.

Notes: We present a model for the electronic contribution to the thermal expansion in the superconducting state based on the weak coupling BCS theory. A simple scaling parameter is introduced to accommodate strong coupling. We find satisfactory agreement between the model's predictions and experimental measurements for a number of materials exhibiting qualitatively different expansion behavior.
