Notes: In four field experiments begun in 1963, each of four herbicides was applied to plots planted wilh the same crop each year. The annual treatments were: MCPA at 17 kg/ha to barley (Hordeum sativa Jess) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at growth stage 15. tri-allate at 17 kg/ha pre-emergcnce to barley and wheat, simazine at l7kg/ha pre-emergence to maize (Zea mays L.) and linuron in two applications of 084 kg/ha pre- and post-emergence to carrots (Daucus carota L.).MCPA did not affect growth or yield of either barley or wheat. In general tri-allate also did not aftect the crops although wheat yield was depressed in 1978, wheat 1000 grain weight was reduced in 1972 and barley germination percentage was increased in 1973. Simazine did not influence the height, yield or appearance of maize. Linuron normally produced no effect on carrot yield, density and size. However, in 2 years when the post-emergence application was late, density but not yield was lower than in control plots. There was no accumulation of residues of any of these compounds in the soil. Rates of loss were similar to those predicted on ihe basis of laboratory experiments. In a fifth experiment these herbicides were applied twice per year (3 times in the case of linuron) at double the rales above on each occasion to bare plots. These applications ceased in 1968 (1969 for MCPA) but residues were monitored until 1972 except in the case of MCPA. Disappearance rates were similar to those in the cropped plots and residues were largely confined to the top 10 cm. The plots treated with MCPA had developed an enhanced ability lo degrade il prior to 1968. This persisted for 5 years after the final application.

Notes: Residues of linuron and simazine were measured by both bioassay and gas-chromatographic methods in soil from field plots that had been treated either 20 weeks (both compounds). 41/2 years (linuron) or 51/2 years (simazine) previously. There were no significant differences between the results obtained with the two methods; therefore the relationship between extractable herbicide and that available to plants was independent of the age of the residue. Hence‘bound’residues, if they existed in these plots, had no phytocidal significance.

Notes: Abstract The motion of a charged test body around a massive charged source can be described by the Klein-Gordon equation with gravitational and electromagnetic fields. When this equation is transformed into a coordinate system rotating with angular velocity Ω, it is found that for each state withψ=R(u)/uY j,k (θ, φ) expiωt, there is a corresponding rate of rotationΩ n,j,k at which the general reiativistic Klein-Gordon equation approximately simplifies into a Schrödinger-Kepler equation, whose characteristic energies differ from those of the equation for a hydrogenlike system because the coupling factorsGmM andqQ must be multiplied by (1+4E/mc 2 ) and (1+2E/mc 2 )1/2, respectively, in the general reiativistic case. The energy levels in the fixed frame are found to be-ħω fixed =ħω rtating -ħkΩ n,j,k , wheren,j, k are the principal, angular momentum, and azimuthal quantum numbers. Applied to the case of a pair of rotating charged bosons of zero spin, the resulting fine structure agrees with the known fine-structure levels of this problem. Applied to the motion of Mercury around the Sun, the first-order calculation gives a rate of perihelion precession of 42.98 sec arc/century. If the Sun and Mercury had electrical chargesQ andq, then to the first order the rate of precession would be approximately 42.98 (1−3y) sec arc/century. (Herey is the ratio of the electric to gravitational force.) Consideration of upper limits on the field strength on the surfaces of the Sun and Mercury, indicated by Stark shifts and molecular binding energy, show that the electric part of the rate of precession, (−129y), is far below 0.1 sec arc/century, and so need not be considered in the test of general relativity based on Mercury's perihelion precession.

Notes: Summary The ductus epididymidis of the marsupial mouse Antechinus stuartii was divided into caput, corpus, and caudal regions using several constant morphological landmarks. Tubule diameter and epithelial height increased gradually from caput to cauda. In contrast, the surface area of the lumen of the ductus epididymidis increased to a maximum in the distal caput region, but decreased markedly in the distal cauda in association with characteristic changes in lumen shape (from circular to slit-shaped) and epithelial height. Epithelial cells of the ductus epididymidis were generally similar in structure to those described in other mammalian species. Principal and basal cells were common throughout the epithelium. Clear and mitochondria-rich cells were also identified, but occurred less frequently. Regional variations in cell ultrastructure were observed only in principal cells. Numerous vesicular inclusions occurred in the apical cytoplasm of cells in caput segments, membrane-bounded, electron-dense bodies were common in distal corpus regions, and a brush border of microvilli characterized the luminal surface of principal cells in caudal segments. Sperm index increased in the proximal caput, declined to basal levels in the distal caput and proximal corpus, and then increased to a maximum in segment 9 of the distal corpus and remained at about this level throughout the cauda epididymidis. Nuclear rotation, loss of cytoplasmic droplets, and other sperm maturational changes were observed along the epididymis. Discarded cytoplasmic droplets collected in large masses interspersed between aggregates of spermatozoa throughout the distal regions of the duct. There was no evidence of phagocytosis by principal cells of cytoplasmic droplets. The epididymis of A. stuartii differs from that of other mammals. The unusual caudal region, which has little storage capacity for sperm, is an unusual adaptation in a species in which the male is known to be polygamous.

Notes: A new class of ethylene polymerization catalysts, namely the bis-(2,4-dimethyl pentadienyl) derivatives of titanium, vanadium, and chromium, have been synthesized and tested. When supported on a variety of inorganic carriers, these compounds yielded 0.2-1.0 million g polymer/g metal/h under typical slurry conditions. Sensitivity to H2 as a molecular weight regulator varied among the three metals, but in the absence of H2 all produced ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene. The molecular weight distribution varied from moderately narrow to very broad (bimodal) depending on the metal and the carrier. Catalyst synthesis and polymer properties are discussed.

Notes: Another class of organochromium compounds, beta-stabilized chromium alkyls, has been synthesized and tested for catalytic activity in ethylene polymerization. Although not active alone, these compounds do exhibit remarkable activity when reacted with a partially dehydroxylated high surface area carrier. The best supports seem to be fluorided alumina or the aluminophosphates, depending on the particular chromium alkyl being tested. The worst was always silica. Both divalent and tetravalent chromium alkyls were tested and found to have high catalytic activity. Comparisons of activity and polymer structure were made between these compounds and previously studied organochromium compounds with pi-bonded ligands.

Notes: High density polyethylene becomes more flexible and tough by adding short branches onto the otherwise linear backbone. Commercially, this is achieved by adding 1-butene or 1-hexene comonomer to reactor and copolymerizing it with ethylene. A process has now been developed which uses low pressure to produce new forms of branched polyethylene without addition of comonomer to the reaction mixture.

Notes: The design and testing of a system for studying underwater explosions is described together with the design of a suitable charge for use in the facility. From the results obtained it is concluded that the system offers a relatively simple method of demonstrating underwater explosion phenomena.
