We appreciate the opportunity to respond to the constructive letter of Daly (1). To put it most simply, he argues that our study (2) may be substantially overstating effects of childhood emotional problems on adult socioeconomic status (SES) measures because we did not also control for measures of childhood intelligence that are correlated with childhood emotional problems.However, the evidence supporting substantial overstatement that Daly provides in his letter is not that persuasive.
