    Notes: Summary The platelet regeneration time (PRT) determined in a group of hypoxaemic patients with chronic obstructive airways disease (COAD), before and after treatment with dipyridamole 150 mg tid, was compared with a group of control subjects. The PRT was computed by a modified non-radioisotope technique and was expressed as t1/2 in days. The patient group showed a significantly shortened PRT as compared to controls of the same age and sex (2.10±0.16 vs 3.65±0.26 days;p〈0.001). One month of dipyridamole administration resulted in prolongation of the PRT in COAD patients (2.10±0.16 days pre-treatment vs 2.75±0.20 post-treatment;p〈0.01), without affecting the platelet cyclo-oxygenase system. This study indicates that dipyridamole may be beneficial in pathological conditions, which are characterized by increased platelet turnover, possibly leading to frequent thromboembolic complications.

    Notes: Summary Eleven hyperlipidaemic patients received two formulations of fenofibrate (differing in in vitro dissolution) in randomized sequence, each for 6 weeks. Formulation N, giving a 2–3-fold higher plasma fenofibrate level compared to R, lowered both the cholesterol and triglyceride levels far more than R. Changes in the total and high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were not significantly correlated with the fenofibrate level. A highly significant correlation was detected for triglycerides in Type IV patients, and for changes both in very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol and triglycerides in the entire group of patients. In conditions of widely distributed steady state levels of an absorbable hypolipidaemic drug, a significant correlation may thus be detected between the plasma level and the reduction of VLDL — associated lipids.

    Notes: Summary The effects of bezafibrate 400 mg/day (slow release formulation) on plasma lipids/lipoproteins and on selected haemostatic parameters were evaluated in a double blind cross-over study in patients with Type IIb and IV hyperlipoproteinaemia. Placebo treatment did not influence any of those parameters, but the drug significantly reduced plasma triglycerides (−45%) and VLDL cholesterol, as well as causing a 12 % fall in total cholesterol and a 20 % increase in HDL cholesterol. Apo AI levels were significantly increased following bezafibrate and Apo B was reduced by about 20 %. In addition to changes in the plasma lipid profile, bezafibrate reduced the sensitivity of platelets to the aggregatory effect of collagen, with no effect on TXB2 production. Fibrinogen levels after bezafibrate treatment were significantly lowered, the effect being more marked in patients with hyperfibrinogenaemia. Bezafibrate did not influence the plasma fibrinolytic profile. It is concluded that bezafibrate, besides its beneficial effects on the plasma lipoprotein profile, can exert beneficial changes on specific haemostatic parameters.

    Notes: Summary The regulation of cellular LDL metabolism by hypertriglyceridemic LDL was tested before and after treatment with acipimox, a nicotinic acid derivative, in 11 type IV hyperlipidemic patients. Large, less dense LDL particles were found in plasma after acipimox treatment. HDL subfractions were only slightly modified, with an increase of dense, cholesteryl ester-enriched and triglyceride-poor HDL3 particles. The LDL (B, E) receptor activity in human skin fibroblasts of LDL isolated before and after treatment was also evaluated. Hypertriglyceridemic LDL proved rather inefficient in regulating receptor activity, with a close to 30% lower capacity than normal LDL to inhibit receptor-mediated uptake and degradation of125I-LDL. This abnormality was fully corrected after acipimox. The reported findings indicate that acipimox treatment in type IV patients can normalize the defective interaction of hypertriglyceridemic LDL with the LDL (B, E) receptor.

    Notes: Midinfrared (3.7–5.3 μm) electroluminescent devices based on a quantum-cascade (QC) design have been demonstrated using InAs/AlSb heterostructures, grown on GaSb substrates. The very high conduction band discontinuity (〉2 eV) of this material system allows the design of QC devices at very short wavelengths. Well-resolved luminescence peaks were observed up to 300 K, with a full-width-at-half-maximum to peak wavelength ratio (Δλ/λ) of the order of 8%. The emission wavelengths are in good agreement with the results of our model. The emitted optical power is lower than that predicted, due to a nonoptimized electron injection into the active region. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The pulsed operation of a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum-cascade laser is reported up to 258 K. These devices emit at 11.3 μm and are based on a plasmon-confinement waveguide. To optimize the material gain, the active region is designed to diminish electron escape to continuum states. Gain and threshold measurement show evidence of better carrier confinement and improved thermal behavior compared to λ(approximate)9 μm GaAs quantum-cascade lasers. The maximum peak-collected power at 77 K is 520 mW per facet and still 27 mW at 258 K. The temperature dependence of the threshold current density is characterized by a T0=128 K. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The room-temperature (300 K), pulsed mode operation of a GaAs-based quantum-cascade laser is presented. This has been achieved by the use of a GaAs/Al0.45Ga0.55As heterostructure which offers the maximum Γ–Γ band offset (390 meV) for this material system without inducing the presence of indirect barrier states. Thus, better electron confinement is achieved, countering the loss of injection efficiency with temperature. These devices show ∼100 K increase in operating temperature with respect to equivalent designs using an GaAs/Al0.33Ga0.67As heterostructure. We also measure 600 mW peak power at 233 K a temperature readily accessible by Peltier coolers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A promising waveguide design for midinfrared (λ=5–20 μm) unipolar semiconductor lasers is proposed and demonstrated in (Al)GaAs quantum cascade structures. In the latter, the active region is embedded between two GaAs layers, with an appropriate doping profile which allows optical confinement, with low waveguide losses and optimal heat dissipation. Low internal cavity losses of 20 cm−1 have been measured using different techniques for lasers with emission wavelength at ∼9 μm. At 77 K, these devices have peak output power in excess of 550 mW and threshold current of 4.7 kA/cm2. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: AlInAs/GaInAs quantum cascade (QC) lasers operating at λ=11.2 μm wavelength are reported. In pulsed operation the peak power is in excess of 50 mW at 110 K heat sink temperature and the devices have been operated at temperatures as high as 200 K. Continuous wave single-mode operation with powers (approximately-equal-to)7 mW at 10 K has been achieved. This work, combined with our previous reports on QC lasers, demonstrates that these new light sources can be tailored, by suitable quantum design, over a wide wavelength range (4–11 μm) using the same heterostructure material. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
