Description / Table of Contents: 1. Fundamental of seismic inversion -- 2. Seismic data handling -- 3. Post-stack seismic inversion -- 4. Pre-stack inversion -- 5. Amplitude variation with offset (AVO) inversion -- 6. Optimization Methods for Nonlinear Problems -- 7. Geostatistical inversion.
Abstract: This book introduces readers to seismic inversion methods and their application to both synthetic and real seismic data sets. Seismic inversion methods are routinely used to estimate attributes like P-impedance, S-impedance, density, the ratio of P-wave and S-wave velocities and elastic impedances from seismic and well log data. These attributes help to understand lithology and fluid contents in the subsurface. There are several seismic inversion methods available, but their application and results differ considerably, which can lead to confusion. This book explains all popular inversion methods, discusses their mathematical backgrounds, and demonstrates their capacity to extract information from seismic reflection data. The types covered include model-based inversion, colored inversion, sparse spike inversion, band-limited inversion, simultaneous inversion, elastic impedance inversion and geostatistical inversion, which includes single-attribute analysis, multi-attribute analysis, probabilistic neural networks and multi-layer feed-forward neural networks. In addition, the book describes local and global optimization methods and their application to seismic reflection data. Given its multidisciplinary, integrated and practical approach, the book offers a valuable tool for students and young professionals, especially those affiliated with oil companies.

Notes: Abstract The present manuscript reviews the use of amines (primary, secondary and tertiary chains and quaternary ammonium salts) as extracting agents for the quantitative determination of actinides in biological samples. Among the primary amines, only Primene, JM-T is used to determine Pu in urine and bone. No one has investigated the possibility of using secondary amines to quantitatively extract actinides from biological samples. Among the tertiary amines, tri-n-octylamine, tri-iso-octylamine, tricaprylamine (Alamine) and trilaurylamine (tridodecylamine) are used extensively to extract and separate the actinides from biological samples. Only one quanternary ammonium salt, methyltricapryl ammonium chloride (Aliquat-336), is used to extract Pu from biological samples.

Notes: Abstract A combination of two techniques, PIXE (particle induced x-ray emission) and RBS (Rutherford backscattering), is proposed as an analytical tool to measure uranium and thorium in environmental and biological samples and in the study of the micro-distribution of uranium is low Z matrices such as biological tissue.

Notes: Abstract The phase diagrams of the binary systems of picric acid with naphthalene, anthracene and phenanthrene, and of α-naphthol withp-toluidine, determined by the thaw-melt method, show the formation of a molecular complex and two eutectics in each system. The heats of the pure components, eutectics and molecular complexes were determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Comparison of the experimental heats of fusion with the theoretical values calculated via the mixture law suggests cluster formation in the melts. The entropy of fusion, enthalpy of mixing and excess thermodynamic functions were also calculated from the heat of fusion data.

Notes: Abstract Higher-order packaging of DNA in chromatin structures could be an essential step in the complex chain of events leading to activation/repression of eukaryotic gene expression. With the goal to investigate this aspect of transcriptional regulation of plant genes involved in symbiotic interactions between legumes and rhizobia we analyze here the molecular parameters of chromatin structure in functioning root nodules, callus and radicles of pea. Morphological intactness and the typical nucleosomal organization are preserved in purified nuclei isolated from all three sources. The calculated values of nucleosomal repeat changed from 185±5 bp in the nuclei of radicles to 168±5 bp and 195±6 bp in nodules and callus respectively. The observed changes are due to alterations in linker DNA lengths. The core histones are identical in all cases, but the subfractional composition of H1 linker histone is subjected to quantitative alterations. The most pronounced is the several-fold increase in content of the lowest-molecular-weight subfraction H1-6 which takes place during nodule development.

Notes: Abstract The femur samples obtained from the general populations were dissected into five different parts: the distal end (DE), distal shaft (DS), middle shaft (MS), proximal shaft (PS) and proximal end (PE). The dissections were performed in the same manner as for the persons exposed to plutonium occupationally. The concentrations of plutonium in these sections were determined by a radiochemical procedure utilizing solvent extraction and alpha-spectrometry. The preliminary results indicate that the distribution of plutonium in the femur was nonuniform and was highest in the proximal end followed by distal end.

Notes: Abstract The literature on the normal content of uranium in urine is reviewed. The reported normal concentration has declined several orders of magnitude over the years, probably due to improvements in analytical technique rather than a real change. The lowest mean values were reported with α spectrometry (mean of 23 ng/l in 12 subjects) and thermal ion mass spectrometry (3.4 ng/l in 1 subject). Even α spectrometry is not sufficiently sensitive at normal levels, so that techniques such as fission track analysis or mass spectrometry must be used to obtain results above the detection limit of the technique for individual samples.
