Notes: Abstract A settlement study, based in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland, New Zealand, has revealed 3 different seasonal reproductive patterns among Demospongiae. Species which settled on our substrates can be divided into summer settlers, winter settlers, or all-year-round settlers. The composition of these groups is given, and the affinities and habitats of the constituent species are commented on. Variation in aspects of the spicule complement have been observed and discussed for three species: Mycale macilenta, Microciona coccinea and Ectyomyxilla kerguelensis.

Notes: We have observed, for the first time, the major change in resistance which results from the collapse of the interconnected gel network at the gel–sol transition. The dc resistivity and ac resistivity (≤10 kHz) were measured as functions of temperature and concentration. At the gel–sol transition, the resistivity increases sharply; in some cases by almost two orders of magnitude. Quantitative analysis of the transport data for detailed comparison with the onset of shear modulus (exponents, etc.) is complicated by the simultaneous occurrence of the rod–coil transition and by a background ionic contribution which leads to finite conductance at concentrations below the critical concentration.

Notes: [Auszug] We have observed the 3,335.475 MHz transition of CH in several southern galactic sources. In RCW38 this line is seeri in absorption, while the two satellite lines are seen in emission. In Several sources the distribution of CH is found to be extended. The observations were rriade on December 10 ...

Notes: [Auszug] Neutral hydrogen observations by the Dutch and Australian groups show the presence of high-velocity hydrogen in the central region with a combination of rotational and radial motions. This high-velocity gas is quite asymmetrical in its distribution. Similarly, the concentrations of OH radicals that ...

Notes: We present a new pump and probe technique for measuring intensity-dependent refractive indices (n2) of waveguide quality thin films, and we apply it to films of polydiacetylene-(CH2)4OCONHOCOC4H9 (PDA-4BCMU). Just below the exciton absorption band, the real part of n2 is negative with magnitude ≈10−7(MW/cm2)−1. The initial fast response of n2 is followed by a slower (∼2.5 ps) decay, in close agreement with the decay of the bleaching of the exciton absorption following resonant excitation. These results are consistent with phase space filling by excitons as the mechanism for the nonlinear index.

Notes: . A two-stage chemostat modified to accommodate the growth of adhesive organisms was used to determine the yield constant, Y, of a representative soil amoeba, Acanthamoeba polyphaga, utilizing as its prey Pseudomonas paucimobilis. The first stage consisted of a glucose-limited bacterial culture in steady state. The second stage consisted of a simplified predator-prey system, nongrowing bacteria serving as the limiting substrate for amoebae. A refined methodology to more accurately determine Y was developed, and Y for Acanthamoeba polyphaga in batch and continuous culture was determined to be 19.1%.

Notes: The paper uses Structural time series models to forecast the demand for tourism by nationality in coastal and city-dominated Spanish provinces. Intervention variables arc introduced lo take account of sudden shocks to tourism demand, such as the bombing of Libya and football's World Cup, The model demonstrates the considerable differences in demand by nationality, and in seasonably, which can occur at the sub-national level. The Structural model generally provided more accurate forecasts than Box-Jenkins models. The results indicate that, ceteris paribus, the tourism demand growth rates in the Spanish provinces considered are unlikely to revert to their previous high levels.

Notes: Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 and (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O3 thin films and bulk ceramics are shown to exhibit two distinct, but related types of photoinduced changes in their hysteresis behavior: (1) a photoinduced suppression of the switchable polarization and (2) a photoinduced voltage shift. Both effects give rise to stable and reproducible hysteresis changes and, thus, either could be the basis of an optical memory. Both phenomena can be explained by trapping of photogenerated charge at domain boundaries to minimize internal depolarizing fields. The space-charge field that causes the voltage-shift effect is primarily due to the migration and subsequent trapping of electrons. However, the thickness dependence of the voltage shift implies that the trapped charge is not confined to the interface. The voltage-shift kinetics exhibit a stretched-exponential dependence, whereas the polarization-suppression effect follows an exponential time dependence. However, both effects exhibit similar relaxation times. In addition, the relaxation time for the voltage-shift effect decreases with increasing light intensity according to a power-law relationship, τ∝I−n, where 0.67〈n〈0.75.

Notes: Groundstation antennas located in Western Australia have been used as elements in the Southern Hemisphere very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) experiment. These commercial antennas of 27.5 and 15 m diameter provide a very economical improvement to the imaging capability of this array and the practice of using such antennas can be extended to other sites in the Southern Hemisphere in preparation for the forthcoming space-VLBI experiments. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The application of high intensity laser-produced gamma rays is discussed with regard to picosecond resolution deep-penetration radiography. The spectrum and angular distribution of these gamma rays is measured using an array of thermoluminescent detectors for both an underdense (gas) target and an overdense (solid) target. It is found that the use of an underdense target in a laser plasma accelerator configuration produces a much more intense and directional source. The peak dose is also increased significantly. Radiography is demonstrated in these experiments and the source size is also estimated. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
