Notes: Polycrystalline barium titanate that has been doped to give a positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTCR) effect is an inhomogeneous material electrically. Analysis of ac impedance data using the complex impedance plane representation gives the dc resistance of PTCR ceramics. By additional use of the complex electric modulus formalism to analyze the same data, the inhomogeneous nature of the ceramics may be probed. This reveals the presence of two, sometimes three elements in the equivalent circuit. Grain-boundary and bulk effects may be distinguished from capacitance data: grain-boundary effects have temperature-independent capacitances, whereas bulk effects show a capacitance maximum at the Curie point and Curie–Weiss behavior above the Curie point. Both grain-boundary and bulk effects appear to contribute to the PTCR effect. These results reveal limitations in current theories of the PTCR effect.

Notes: Abstract We have measured the resistive upper critical field of overdoped single crystals of Tl2Ba2CuO6 from the zero-field transition temperatureT c (approximately 20 K) to temperatures as low as 12 mK, corresponding to less than 0.001T c. In sharp contrast to the predictions of standard theories of superconductivity, the critical field is found to rise steeply with positive curvature as the temperature is reduced, and no sign of saturation is observed down to the lowest temperatures reached.

Notes: Abstract T c data are reported for powders of cation-stoichiometric Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oδ and for nonstoichiometric samples based on the three mechanisms Bi⇄Sr, Sr⇄Ca and Sr vacancy. For each, the T c values depend critically on the final oxygen contents, which were varied by heating samples in either O2 or N2 at different temperatures. Stoichiometric Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oδ has the highest T c, 92 K, obtained after heating in O2 at ∼ 820 °C. Heating in O2 at lower temperatures gives rise to overdoping and T c decreases to 60 K. The other cation compositions show a smaller maximum T c but also less reduction in T c on overdoping. Under-doped samples, with reduced T c values were obtained on heating in N2. These data, together with selected literature results, lead to a unified picture of the variation of T c with cation composition and oxygen content.

Notes: Abstract The influence of low-temperature annealing, at 〈 360 °C, in various reducing and oxidizing atmospheres for a series of BaTiO3 ceramics with a positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTCR) is discussed. Combined impedance and modulus spectroscopy is used to analyse a.c. impedance data and shows that the total resistance of the sample can be composed of up to three components, dependent on the cooling rate from the sintering temperature. For quickly cooled samples the PTCR response is dominated by an outer shell on individuals grains, whereas for slowly cooled samples the grain boundary resistance dominates. Annealing in reducing atmospheres destroys the grain boundary PTCR effect whereas the outer-shell grain PTCR effect is relatively insensitive to the reducing atmosphere. It is proposed that the acceptor states responsible for the outer-grain and grain-boundary PTCR effects are predominantly intrinsic metal vacancies, i.e. Ba and/or Ti, and adsorbed oxygen, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Pore reduced cements (PRC) are used as a high resistance matrix for ac impedance studies on cement systems with impedance data being collected over a range of temperatures (−60 to ca. 20 °C) and electrode contact pressures (up to 72 MPa). The results show the presence of two arcs in the complex impedance plots, Z *, at all measured temperatures. The low frequency (LF) arc is attributed to an ineffective electrical contact at the sample/electrode interface and although the high frequency (HF) arc is associated with the cement, its characteristics are also influenced by the contact resistance. Arrhenius plots show the activation energy for conductivity associated with the LF and HF elements to be the same indicating similar conduction mechanisms. Low and high frequency arcs are resolved only by the different geometric factors (conductive volumes) associated with the ineffective contact and the bulk cement specimen.

Notes: Abstract Spark-plasma-sintering (SPS) has been applied to BaTiO3 to prepare dense ceramics consisting of submicrometre-sized powder. Relatively dense (typically 97% of the theoretical X-ray density) pellets with an average grain size remaining similar to that of the starting powder, approximately 0.6 μm, were obtained by the SPS process. Fixed frequency (1 kHz) measurements show the room temperature permittivity of SPS ceramics to be relatively high, approximately 3500, and at least double the value of conventionally sintered ceramics, approximately 1500. Alternating current (a.c.) impedance spectroscopy measurements show that SPS is an effective process to reduce the influence of intergranular (grain boundary) effects on the permittivity and direct current (d.c.) resistance characteristics of BaTiO3 ceramics substantially.
