Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si riportano i risultati di misure accoppiate di capacità e di riflessione selettiva compiute su una miscela colesterica sottoposta ad un campo elettrico statico orientato parallelamente all'asse dell'elica.
Notes: Summary We report results of coupled capacitance and optical measurements made on a cholesteric mixture submitted to a d.c. electric field parallel to the helical axis. A definite hierarchy for the onset of different deformations is found if the sample thickness is much larger than the helical pitch. Three distinct thresholds are measured for sample thickness in the range 6 μm≤d≤100 μm.

Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Riportiamo nuovi metodi ottici utili per investigare l’ordine orientazionale di cristalli liquidi nematici.
Notes: Summary We report new optical methods useful to investigate the orientational order of nematic liquid crystals. The first one uses a linear optical technique and a variable-thickness cell to get a precise measurement of the anchoring energies at the boundaries. The second one exploits the nonlinear self-phase modulation to evaluate the elastic anisotropy of a nematic liquid crystal. Examples are reported of measurements performed on hybrid aligned liquid crystals.

Notes: Summary We present a new computational method which allows to work out the director orientation in each location of a nematic liquid-crystal cell from a measurement of its reflectivity. We show how it is possible to extract this information from the fringe pattern due to the onset of total internal reflection inside the sample. The very good agreement with the expected results makes the method suitable to study several kinds of deformations occurring in liquid crystals.

Notes: Summary A brief review of early studies of optical properties of lyotropic mesophases is presented. New results about refractive-index measurements in various phases of a ternary system are shown. Emphasis is given to the optical properties of the different lyotropic nematic mesophases. Finally a short review is then devoted to the optical effects of external applied fields such as magnetic, electric and mechanical ones.

Notes: An extended investigation of the phase separation process in polymer dispersed liquid crystals is presented. A detailed analysis of the experimental results shows that the nucleation and growth of the liquid crystal droplets from the polymeric matrix can be described as the coarsening process occurring in binary alloys. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the preparation methods and electro-optical characterization of polymer-dispersed liquid crystals with nanosized liquid crystal domains obtained by using a multifunctional monomer in a prepolymer mixture that is suitable for a fast photopolymerization process. The electric-field-induced optical phase shift has been measured using a Mach–Zender interferometer, getting values up to π/2 with an applied voltage of about 20 V/μm with no dependence on the light polarization. The high transmittance of the samples make them suitable for photonic devices and telecom applications. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The first experimental observation of strong optical nonlinearities induced by a laser field in polymer dispersed liquid crystals is reported. The measured rise time of the effect agrees with the interpretation of a thermal origin of the phenomenon.

Notes: Efficient recording of polarization gratings in dye-doped liquid crystals is reported. By exploiting the effect of light-induced anchoring of the molecular director, it has been possible to write stable holographic gratings with a diffraction efficiency of 8% at a resolution of 1000 lines/mm. The required surface energy density of 0.3 J/cm2 sets these materials among the most sensitive for optical storage. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
