Notes:
Summary Partial-crystalline samples of PE, PP and PA have been wetgrounded and wetpolished with loose abrasive powder on hard foils of PUR-foam. It could be shown, that on principle a similar abrasive mechanism occurred as in the case of metals. With increasing softness of the material additional flattening by plastic deformation will result. Microtom-cuts perpendicular to the polished surface proved, that the partial-crystalline character of the surface will be preserved, although the morphology has been destroyed. Amorphous interfaces and grain boundaries between the spherulites are weakpoints in the structure. Those zones prevent, that the deformation of the surface layer can effect deeper layers in the material. In this sense the polished surface layer cannot be compared with the Beilby-layers in metals.
