    Notes: Summary The antidiuretic activity of oxytocin (OT) was measured in Brattleboro rats with congenital diabetes insipidus. A dose dependent antidiuretic response was found in animals receiving chronic infusions of 0.1 μg/h, 1.0 μg/h, and 5 μg/h of OT. OT infused at the rate of 5 μg/h over a 7-day period completely reversed the symptoms of diabetes insipidus. The results support the concept that OT serves as a weak agonist of vasopressin at the level of the kidney and at pharmacological levels exhibits antidiuretic activity.

    Notes: Abstract Detailed stratigraphic analysis of the Green Tuff of Pantelleria shows that this formation can be divided into several members designateda throughh from base to top. These members have a coherent pattern when traced from outcrop to outcrop throughout the island shedding light on their origin. Only memberg completely mantles the entire island. The distribution of the other members is controlled by prevailing wind direction or by topography. Membera is entirely of fall origin. Membersc ande are of fall and/or surge type. Membersb,d, andh have the characteristics of thin welded ash-flow tuffs. Membersf andg are ash-flow tuffs with textural characteristics of compound cooling units. Most of the ash-flow tuffs exhibit characteristics of ignimbrites: vertical fluidization pipes, local concentrations of lithic lapilli, imbrication of clasts, and valley ponding. Memberg is unusual in that it is highly-welded, exhibits large-scale rheomorphic structures, contains huge lithic clasts, and has near-vertical foliation where it adheres to cliffs and caldera walls. Granulometric data from the members identified in the field as ignimbrites confirms this conclusion, as do density profiles through the various members.

    Notes: Abstract  Additional data from proximal areas enable a reconstruction of the stratigraphy and the eruptive chronology of phases III and IV of the 1982 eruption of El Chichón Volcano. Phase III began on 4 April at 0135 GMT with a powerful hydromagmatic explosion that generated radially fast-moving (∼100 ms–1) pyroclastic clouds that produced a surge deposit (S1). Due to the sudden reduction in the confining pressure the process continued by tapping of magma from a deeper source, causing a new explosion. The ejected juvenile material mixed with large amounts of fragmented dome and wall rock, which were dispersed laterally in several pulses as lithic-rich block-and-ash flow (F1). Partial evacuation of juvenile material from the magmatic system prompted the entrance of external water to generate a series of hydromagmatic explosions that dispersed moisture-rich surge clouds and small-volume block-and-ash flows (IU) up to distances of 3 km from the crater. The eruption continued by further decompression of the magmatic system, with the ensuing emission of smaller amounts of gas-rich magma which, with the strong erosion of the volcanic conduit, formed a lithic-rich Plinian column that deposited fallout layer B. Associated with the widening of the vent, an increase in the effective density of the uprising column took place, causing its collapse. Block-and-ash flows arising from the column collapse traveled along valleys as a dense laminar flow (F2). In some places, flow regime changes due to topographic obstacles promoted transformation into a turbulent surge (S2) which attained minimum velocities of approximately 77 ms–1 near the volcano. The process continued with the formation of a new column on 4 April at 1135 GMT (phase IV) that emplaced fall deposit C and was followed by hydromagmatic explosions which produced pyroclastic surges (S3).

    Notes: Plasma total lipids were significantly higher in 17β-oestradiol(E2)-treated immature rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss at week 4 after implantation, due to increases in polar and neutral lipids. The lipid classes responding were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylethanolamine, sterols and sterol esters, in a proportion that approximately reflected the increase in plasma vitellogenin (VtG) levels as measured by a non-competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Plasma non-esterified fatty acids and triacylglycerol were not affected by E2 treatment. Plasma growth hormone GH levels were increased, and plasma somatostatin-14 (SRIF) levels decreased in E2-treated fish, responses which could be secondary to elevated plasma lipid (VtG) content, although a direct E2 action on somatotroph function is possible. Plasma T4 concentrations were not affected by E2 treatment, but plasma T3 concentrations were significantly lower than in controls 1 week after implantation when plasma E2 concentrations were the highest; this is in support of the hypothesis that E2 has a suppressive action on T3 production.

    Notes: Total lipid and lipid class composition of selected tissues and serum were determined for juvenile steelhead trout Salmo gairdneri, during the smolting period between 25 January and 19 April 1982. The total lipid content of the serum, liver, light muscle and dark muscle was significantly depleted during smolt transformation. Mesenteric fat total lipid concentration fluctuated little over the sampling period. Phospholipids of muscle and mesenteric fat exhibited little seasonality. Cholesterol was significantly depleted from dark muscle and liver. Large stores of triacylglycerol (TGL) in the parrs' mesenteric fat, dark muscle and liver implicate these tissues as lipid depot organs. In those tissues depleted of lipid, TGL concentrations were reduced more than any other lipid class. This supports the hypothesis that increased catabolism is the cause of loss of body fat during salmonid smolt transformation.

    Notes: Implantation of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss with somatostatin-14 (SS-14) for 20 days resulted in reduced food conversion as well as significant growth retardation compared to controls. Relative growth as mass was reduced by 20%, whereas relative growth by length was reduced by 45%. A single intraperitoneal injection of SS-14 reduced plasma levels of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-I) and insulin. SS-14 injection also reduced [35S]-sulphate incorporation into gill cartilage compared to saline-injected fish. In addition, in vitro incubation of gill cartilage with SS-14 reduced [35S]-sulphate incorporation in a doserelated manner. These results indicate that SS-14 inhibits growth of rainbow trout and suggests that SS-14, in addition to influencing GH, may play an extra-pituitary role in the modulation of the GH-IGF-I axis.
