Notes: Abstract In this paper, switch-type humidity sensors based on PAA (polyacrylic acid) and its copolymers were examined. The humidity sensing properties of these polymers, such as hysteresis, response time, water resistivity and long-term stability were investigated. The factors which influence the humidity sensors' inflection point were investigated experimentally as well. The results show that, the inflection point of the humidity sensors varies with the content of crosslinking agent and the sample composition. In particular, humidity sensors based on Sample E and B show good property and stability.

Notes: The electrorheological properties of polyaniline suspensions are typical of most electrorheological systems and are a function of many parameters such as suspension concentration, applied field strength and the relative permittivity of the particles. When only one parameter is varied, the suspensions' electrorheological effects increase with increasing concentration of dispersed phase, field strength and particle relative permittivity. The rheograms of the suspensions at different field strengths and concentrations have been studied. The dependence of the dynamic yield stress on particle concentration has also been determined.

Notes: The influence of inorganic salts on the formation of lyotropic liquid crystals of hydroxyethyl cellulose acetate (HECA) in N,N′dimethylformamide (DMF) was studied. In the presence of CaCl2, an inorganic salt of a principal group metal, the solution of HECA/DMF/CaCl2 was a biphasic system. The temperature of the transformation from the liquid crystalline phase to the isotropic one increased with adding CaCl2 because local HECA concentration increases in the HECA/DMF phase. When CuCl2 or CoCl2, inorganic salts of transitional metals, was added, the solutions were monophasic systems and the complexes of HECA with Cu2+ or Co2+ were formed in solutions, which results in the increase of the temperature of the transfomation from the liquid crystalline phase to the isotropic one.

Notes: Copolymerization of 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) with styrene (St) was performed in ethanol using 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator, and then a random copolymer P(4VP-St) was obtained. A soluble pyridinium-type polymer containing N-benzyl-4-vinylpyridinium bromide [Q-P(4VP-St)], was prepared by quaternization of P(4VP-St) with benzyl bromide (BzBr). The structures of P(4VP-St) and its quaternized product Q-P(4VP-St) were identified by FTIR. The 4VP content in P(4VP-St) and the pyridinium group content (Cq) in Q-P(4VP-St) were determined by nonaqueous titration and argentometry, respectively. The molecular weight of p(4VP-St) was characterized by intrinsic viscosity. In addition, the charge density σ of the soluble pyridinium-type polymers was measured by colloid titration, and the mathematical relation between σ and Cq was established as follows: σ = -0.090 + 0.942 Cq. A preliminary investigation was made into the viscosity behavior and electroconductivity of the Q-P(4VP-St)/polar solvent system. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Electrorheological suspensions are suspensins of solid particles whose rheological behavior can be strongly modified by the application of an electric field, In this article, the electrorheological properties of suspensions containing chitin particles (and its derivative -  carboxylmethyl chitosan particles) in silicone oil are reported for a range of suspension weight concentrations, applied field strengths, shear rates, etc. In these suspensions, glycerin was used as an activator. The adsorbed amount of glycerin, one of the electrorheological parameters, was also studied experimentally. The ER effect of the chitin suspension reaches the maximum at about 11% of weight concentration. The dependence of the experimentally determined dynamic yield stress on particle concentration and field strength is found to be similar to that reported for other systems. The dynamic yield stress is found to increase with the particle concentration and the applied electric field strength. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The structure of aggregates formed from poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We have found that the primary associated particles are nearly spherical and, as the association advances, the particles lengthen. Eventually aggregates branch to form a three-dimensional network. The bulk PVB was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We have found that the bulk PVB grains are aggregates of the particles the shape and dimension of which are similar to those of the primary associated particles formed in PVB solution. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons.
