Notes: [Auszug] In the course of investigations into the mechanism and kinetics of the liquid-induced crystallization of amorphous polymer it has been postulated that crystallization occurs on a progressive front accompanying the diffusion of the particular liquid1. It was further considered that if this was by a ...

Notes: [Auszug] Similar behaviour occurs with amorphous polyethylene terephthalate sheet; but here a somewhat different mechanism for the cohesive breakdown is Suggested. If a strip of sheet (approximately 0-1x1x5 cm.) is given a bending stress by wrapping round a steel rod (1-5 cm. diam.) and then held firmly in ...

Notes: [Auszug] The presence of a crystalline phase has so far been inferred from a development of opacity, generally associated with a spherulitic structure in unoriented polymer, from a visual change in mechanical properties and from an increase in polymer density, due allowance being made for any imbibed ...

Notes: [Auszug] Use of reflectance and transmission microscopy indicates that the phenomenon is basically an internal one and involves a particulate structure, the size of the particles being of the order of a few microns. X-ray diffraction reveals no sharp distinction between samples which have undergone this ...

Notes: It has previously been shown that glassy poly(ethylene terephthalate) gives rise to endothermal peaks in DTA when annealed at temperatures near to the glass temperature. The present work describes results obtained from DTA and DSC on annealing a number of glassy polymers which have been rapidly cooled from above the glass temperature and on slowly cooled samples of the same polymers. The polymers which have been studied are: poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(methyl methacrylate), atactic and isotactic polystyrene, bisphenol-A polycarbonate, poly(ethyl methacrylate) and poly(vinyl acetate). In every case, evidence of structural reorganization is observed, and the rate at which this takes place is reported. Separate studies on poly(ethylene terephthalate) reflect density changes which also take place upon annealing. These results are discussed in the context of the calorimetric observations.

Notes: Abstract Four samples of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), with different thermal histories were investigated by radial distribution function (RDF) methods. Intramolecular distances in the polymer repeat unit were successfully attributed to peaks in the RDF plot up to values of r ∼ 5 Å. A broad peak at ∼ 4 Å was attributed to nearest neighbour intermolecular ordering, but there was no evidence of ordering beyond this distance in samples annealed for prolonged periods at temperatures close to the polymer T g. This evidence does not support previous models proposing the presence of extensive para-crystalline ordering in amorphous PET. Low frequency broad peaks, with a periodicity of ∼ 4 Å, were resolved out to values of r ∼ 20 Å in the RDF plot for a sample with a density crystallinity index of ∼ 20%, thus confirming the sensitivity of the RDF analysis to short range intermolecular ordering.

Notes: Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of poly(ethylene terephthalate) has been carried out on samples of amorphous, cold-drawn, heat-crystallized, and acetone-crystallized polymer. From DTA it appears that for amorphous material a prolonged “secondary” crystallization process follows a primary process in the region of 140°C. For cold-drawn polymer, heat treatment does not reflect differences observed in previous x-ray diffraction studies. The TGA gives evidence that a high temperature endothermic peak observed in DTA may not be directly associated with depolymerization. With acetone-crystallized material a high degree of acetone retention is detected.

Notes: A study has been made of the dc volume resistivity of plasticized PVC using a guarded-electrode system in a sensitive vibrating capacitor-electrometer circuit. Transient effects were found to be pronounced in all but the least plasticized compositions, and the behavior in general was non-Ohmic. The resistivity decreases with plasticizer concentration and with temperature; an Arrhenius-type relationship is observed and resistivity undergoes an inflection at the glass transition temperature. The mechanism of conduction appears to be electrolytic rather than charge injection or semiconduction.
