    Notes: Abstract Renal function at the brush border membrane level has been studied using characteristic enzymes, such as alkaline phosphatase, leucine-aminopeptidase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase. Urinary enzyme studies were performed using leprosy patients, classified on the basis of bacteriological index (BI〉3; n=20,BI〈3; n=12, BI-ve; n=10) and compared with control subjects (n=10). The role of enzymuria in monitoring WHO-recommended multidrug therapy (MDT) has been evaluated in these patients. A significant increase in the enzyme activities (p〈0.01), as well as significant (p〈0.01) proteinurea in 24-hour urine samples of both the smear positive groups (BI〉3,BI〈3) prior to therapy compared to control subjects, indicates proximal tubular functional impairment at brush border membrane level. In the smear negative (BI-ve) grou, no significant difference was observed in enzyme activities as compared with the control group. In a follow-up study (BI〉3; n=13, BI〈3; n=4) the activities of all the enzymes decreased significantly in all the groups when compared to a corresponding untreated group. The follow-up study was not carried out on the smear negative group. The surprising finding was the differential behaviour of r-glutamyl transpeptidase, whose activity increased significantly (p〈0.01) even after therapy inBI〉3 group when compared with untreated patients. However in a detailed work-up including hepatic and renal function tests, the serum biochemistry was found to be normal both before and after therapy. Urinary excretion of brush border enzymes seems to be related to bacterial load, and their potential in studying the effect of MDT remains unclear.

    Notes: Abstract  This paper deals with the problem of increased heavy metal constituents in agricultural soils due to the expanded use of fertilizers and elevated atmospheric deposition. It discusses the extent of contamination in soil and establishes an environmental monitoring program in the chosen area of concern in the southern coastal region of Texas. Grain size, pH, and metals (Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb, Ni, Ba, As, Cr, Mn, and Fe) were determined in soils of the middle Rio Grande basin. The soils were mainly of sand texture and alkaline in character. Fine sand constituted the major proportion of the soil, and clay and silt ranged from 8–30% of the soil. Correlations of metal concentrations to grain size and iron contents were performed. Metals, except Cd and Pb, gave positive to negative relationships with decreases in grain size. Silt gave no relationship with metal content while clay and silt had a positive relationship. All these metals had a positive correlation with iron in the soil. The results indicate metals are associated with coarse sand, clay, and iron hydroxides surfaces of the soil. The comparison of metal content in soil of the middle Rio Grande basin with metals from other areas of the world suggests that it is relatively uncontaminated.

    Notes: Abstract The Oso Bay, Texas, sediments from nine sites were analyzed by GC-MS for organics to measure contamination in the bay. In most of the sites sediments contained tetrachloroethene (87–1433 μg/kg), bis (2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (40–193 μg/kg), and aliphatic hydrocarbons, C8-C13 (720–2491 μg/kg). Sources of these contaminants include a landfill, military facilities, and municipal and industrial discharges. Size analysis of the sediments indicates they contain a high percentage of muddy sand (50–75 percent), which suggests that Oso Bay consists of common bay margin sediments.

    Notes: Abstract High cellulolytic activity of particular strains did not cause dominance of one, or a few, species of fiber-digesting bacteria in a cattlewaste anaerobic digester. The population contained a large number of species and varieties with different cellulolytic and fiber-digesting activities. Although mixed cultures of some of these bacteria showed no intereffects, with others, cellulolysis was less or in some cases greater than that shown by individual components of the cultures. The interactions were probably related to effects on growth of the bacteria rather than on activities of components of the cellulase enzyme complex, and culture filtrates of two of the more numerous cellulolytic species ofClostridium affected growth of other cellulolytic bacteria. The inhibitory factor(s) appeared to be of bacteriocin type, but the stimulatory factor(s) was unknown. It was suggested that these interactions are localized or short-lived in the digester, and so the population remains in a “dynamic” steady state. Some inhibitions of growth of rumen cellulolytic bacteria were caused by the digester bacteria, but it was suggested that factors other than these inhibitions are responsible for the absence of rumen bacteria from anaerobic digesters.

    Notes: Meristematic shoot segments (MSSs) were used to develop an efficient and reproducible regeneration system via multiple shoot differentiation in two elite cultivars of winter wheal. Cylindrical basal shoot segments. 3 4 mm in length, were excised from seedlings derived from mature embryos that had been germinated directly on MS-based medium containing growth regulators. These segments were further cultured on the same medium formulations. Out of 24 variations analysed, the combination of 2 mg1 4-amino-3.5,6-trichloropicolinic acid (picloram) + 3 mg/1 thidiazuron (TDZ) was found to be the most effective in inducing clumps of multiple schools, buds with little callusing. Sectors of these clumps were (1) further multiplied by biweekly subculturing on 2 mg/l picloram + 2.5 mg/l TDZ leading lo highly differentiating green clusters of buds without loss of tnorphogenesis for more than 12 months so far. and without albinism, or (2) transferred to 0.1 nig I picloram + I mg/l TDZ for shoot development and elongation. The elongated shoots rooted on basal medium with 0.5 mg/l indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) were transferred to soil and showed normal growth and fertility. Both cultivars formed multiple schools ranging from 28 to 33 per responding MSS after 10 12 weeks.
