Notes: According to post-Vedānga pre-Siddhāntic Jaina canonical texts, 18 muhūrtas (1 muhūrta = 48 minutes) and 12 muhūrtas are respectively the greatest and the smallest lengths of daylight. The length of any day (daylight) of the year can be computed therefrom through a simple linear zigzag function. However, the ratio 3: 2 between the greatest and the smallest length of daylight holds good for a latitude 35° north very near to that of Babylon. This ratio is also propounded in Jyotisa Vedāngam. It is exposed here that the ratio 3: 2 holds equally good for Gandhāra, a renowned seat of ancient Indian culture. Gandhāra might have been used for purposes like those of a standard station for purposes of time-reckoning in ancient India. However, by applying a correction for the variable rate of flow of water through the orifice of a water-clock, it has been exposed that the actual ratio of maximum and minimum lengths of daylight measured in time-units is different from the ratio of the amounts of water to be poured into the water-clock on the respective days. It is revealed that the ratio 3:2 of the amounts of water to be poured into the water-clock on the longest and shortest days (daylights) is equivalent to the ratio √3: √2 of the actual time-lengths of the longest and the shortest days respectively. It refers to a latitude 19° 6 north, very near to that of Ujjainī, another renowned seat of ancient Indian culture.

Notes: Transient infrared (IR) laser spectroscopy near 3100 cm−1 was used to observe the ν1 and ν13 transitions of the allyl radical, with their band origins found to lie at 3113.9779(3) cm−1 and near 3110.5 cm−1, respectively. Detailed assignment and analysis of the ν1 transition identified over 1100 transitions, and yielded improved values for ΔK and ΦK ground state centrifugal distortion constants, as well as a new set of excited state (ν1=1) rotational and centrifugal distortion constants, in addition to determining the band origin. Transitions involving states with quantum number up to Ka=11 and N=27 were identified. Strong perturbations were found in the excited state, included global perturbations of the Ka′=3 branch, extensive perturbations in the Ka′=2 and 4 branches, and very localized perturbations in the Ka′=6 branch. The Ka′=9 and 10 branches also appear to be significantly perturbed. Possible sources for these perturbations are discussed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The influence of non-ionic (X-77) and organosilicone (L-77) adjuvants and of methylated seed oil (MSO) on the uptake, translocation and efficacy of glyphosate was investigated in Bidens frondosa L. and Panicum maximum Jacq. In addition, the physicochemical properties of adjuvants and adjuvant + glyphosate aqueous solutions were determined. Significantly lower surface tension and contact angle values were obtained with aqueous solutions of L-77 alone and with glyphosate. Over a 48-h time course, it was observed that 〉50% of applied 14C-glyphosate was absorbed within 15 min in B. frondosa with L-77. At 6 h and thereafter, 14C glyphosate absorption was significantly higher with MSO compared with X-77 in B. frondosa. In P. maximum, uptake and translocation of 14C-glyphosate + adjuvant were increased in general up to 48 h after treatment application, except with L-77, which showed no improvement in uptake – instead there was a significant reduction compared with no treatment with L-77. This indicated its antagonistic effect on this grass species. The lower values of 14C-glyphosate in P. maximum also confirmed that adjuvant effects were species specific. In the efficacy studies, glyphosate formulated with L-77 achieved significantly higher control of B. frondosa, while there was no control of P. maximum with this treatment. This confirmed antagonism in glyphosate absorption into P. maximum by L-77. Furthermore, significantly higher control of tested plants was recorded with MSO in comparison to X-77, which confirms the solubilizing or humectant nature of MSO.

Notes: The effect of non-ionic nonylphenol (NP) surfactants containing 4–14 ethylene oxide (EO) molecules on the distribution of asulam and diflufenican was investigated in Pteridium aquilinum L. Kuhn and Avena fatua L. The distribution of the herbicides was dependent on the EO content and concentration of surfactant and differed between plant species and herbicide. The surface properties of contact angle, droplet diameter and surface tension were examined. For solutions of asulam, the greatest reductions in contact angle, surface tension and greatest droplet diameter were obtained with surfactants of EO 6.5–10 (at 0.001–0.1%). For solutions of diflufenican, these responses were greatest when applied with surfactant of EO 4. Surfactants of EO 6.5–10 increased the uptake and translocation of [14C]asulam in P. aquilinum, particularly at surfactant concentrations of 0.01 % and 0.1 %. All surfactants increased uptake of [14C]asulam in A. fatua with no significant effects of surfactant EO number or concentration. For both species, there was a positive correlation between the optimum surface characteristics of the herbicide droplets and the uptake of asulam. With diflufenican, greatest uptake and translocation by mature frond tissue of P. aquilinum occurred at the highest concentration of surfactant EO 4; in A. fatua, however, uptake and translocation were not significantly affected by any of the surfactants.

Notes: Pseudo-two-dimensional wakes are generated by introducing spanwise cellular structures in the otherwise plane turbulent wake by means of the castellated blunt trailing edges of different configurations. The transverse growths of these coflowing cellular wakes are found to be independent of each other without any noticeable spanwise interaction. This wake growth is examined in the light of the plane equilibrium wake analysis. Though these wakes are not found to be exactly self-similar, their growth shows a nonmonotonous approach toward the asymptotic state appropriate to that of a plane wake. The dye emission in the wakes illustrated a coherent vortical structure in the transverse plane, similar to that of the usual two-dimensional wake, in spite of the initial spanwise irregularities.
