    The German historical schools in the history of economic thought (2005)

    Notes: Purpose - The purpose of this article is to study how the German historical schools are treated in the histories of economic thought as the background for an exploration of some historiographical issues in the history of economic thought. Design/methodology/approach - The study describes the contributions of the members of the German historical schools from a variety of different viewpoints and attitudes toward the history of economic thought. Findings - One conclusion is that several of the things most of the economists of the German historical schools desired are now part of mainstream economics. These include an enlarged scope of economics, changes in the role of the state in economic life, attention to the relationships of law and economics and recognition of the importance of history. Another conclusion is that several historiographical and methodological problems important for the history of economic thought need further study. Originality/value - The study helps to explain and understand some historiographical aspects of the history of economic thought. It examines practices, principles, theories, methodology and forms of presentation of scholarly historical research on one subject in the history of economic thought.

    Notes: Reports that standard accounts of the life of Heinrich von Stackelberg, a brilliant theoretical economist, are full of errors and lacunae. In addition, claims that many writers in the English language literature have seriously misjudged his economics because they make the unwarranted assumption that there must be a close relationship between a person's scientific work in economics and his politics - he was a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party.     Notes: The focus of this paper is the economic theory of the plans for the European Monetary Union. Part 1 demonstrates that economists, bankers and policy makers know very little about monetary policy. Part 2 explains the errors of the common practice of defining money by its functions. Because any monetary policy must rest on a definition of money it seems reasonable to conclude that a flawed definition might lead to problems with monetary policy. Part 3 applies this insight to the plans for a common currency in Europe. Because of uncertainties about the timing and details of the implementation, some important considerations are necessarily speculative. They are relegated to appendices. Appendix 1 comments on the timing and authorship and responsibility for the official reports with their unspecified authors. Appendix 2 supplies some grounds for doubting the ultimate durability of the European Monetary Union focusing on reasons that are historical, economic and pragmatic. Because the entire movement is driven by politics, not economics, Appendix 3 considers some of the relevant political issues. The conclusions summarize and speculate on possible reasons for successful outcomes.

    Notes: This is an article about the possible lessons for academic freedom that Dühring's expulsion from the University of Berlin might have for us today. It begins with a brief discussion of his strange fate in the English language literature in contrast with his high position in the history of economic thought. It is no surprise that questions of the denial of academic freedom have long been discussed. The remainder of the article is devoted to a discussion of academic freedom since his time and the possible lessons these developments might have for us today. The most important of these is the ancient truism - academic freedom is always under attack from many sides and must be vigorously defended.

Uses evidence from three main sources: histories of economics, the periodical literature and doctoral dissertations to support the conclusion that Stackelberg already has an important and lasting place in the history of economic thought. Points out that the use of Stackelberg's ideas and techniques is now as general and common as the use of those of Cournot, Walras, Pareto and Nash. Presents a short section devoted to his views on state control because these are so often misunderstood. Speculates on possible reasons why Stackelberg is not ranked more highly than he usually is.

    Notes: Abstract This paper explores possible reasons for the longevity of the German Civil Code (Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch) using mostly English language sources. The introduction reviews the reasons usually given for the durability of the Code in the context of the history of Germany. None are completely satisfactory. The next section is devoted to a description of the Code. It concludes with attention to the patriotic motives of its developers, an important factor in determining its unique character. The third part examines what social scientists and legal scholars, with an emphasis on sociologists, have written about legal evolution and this important legislation. Their results, although often interesting and provocative, made no substantial contribution to the problem. The “Conclusions” summarize and make the point that it is not known what determines the quality or durability of legal systems.

Nevertheless, many of the legal and institutional features of the economy he envisioned are in place, although in altered form.
