Notes: We develop a model for the propagation of a fluid-filled crack in a porous medium. The problem is motivated by the mechanism whereby drainage networks may form in partially molten rock below the Earth's lithosphere. Other applications include the propagation of hydraulic fractures in jointed rocks and in oil drilling operations, and the formation of dessication cracks in soils. Motivated by the lithospheric problem, we study a situation in which gravity acts in the direction of crack propagation. The model couples the elastoliydrodynamic equations of crack propagation with a pore pressure field in the porous rock, which drives the fluid flow which supplies the crack. The effect of the pore flow is to include a diffusional term in the evolution equation for the crack width, thus allowing a crack initiated at the base of the lithosphere to propagate down into the asthenosphere. Asymptotic and numerical solutions are presented for this crack evolution. However, the predicted drainage of melt into this crack is tiny compared with the upward percolative melt migration, and the predicted width of cracks (millimetres) is much too small to allow propagation of melt into the lithosphere without freezing. As a mechanism to explain magma fracturing in the lithosphere, the process described here therefore requires further refinement.

Notes: It is desirable for one to be able to construct separation variables for systems with SL(N) R matrices or Lax pairs. This article relates and extends the two known methods of construction. The Sklyanin's functional Bethe ansatz (FBA) [Commun. Math. Phys. 150, 181–191 (1992)] was previously only known for SL(2) and SL(3) (and associated) R matrices. The algebraic geometric method of Adams, Harnad, and Hurtubise [Commun. Math. Phys. 155, 385–413 (1993)] has been shown to work for SL(N) but up until now only for linear Poisson brackets. In this article Sklyanin's program is advanced by giving the FBA for certain systems with SL(N) R matrices. This is achieved by constructing rational functions A(u) and B(u) of the matrix elements of T(u), so that, in the generic case, the zeros xi of B(u) are the separation coordinates and the Pi=A(xi) provide their conjugate momenta. It is shown that the separation variables thus defined are the same as those given (as the simultaneous solutions of several equations in two variables) by the other method. The crucial calculation of Adams et al. of the commutation relations is also adapted to the case of quadratic Poisson brackets. The method is illustrated with the magnetic chain and the Gaudin model, and its wider applicability is discussed. No knowledge of algebraic geometry is required.

Notes: Phytophthora rot is a major soybean disease in the Eastern US corn belt. The objective of this experiment was to determine the genetic relationship between tolerance to phytophthora rot and agronomic traits measured in environments where the disease was not a factor. A set of 66 random lines from a broad-based population was evaluated for agronomic traits in seven field environments and for tolerance in greenhouse tests. Pairs of resistant and susceptible isolines were used to determine whether phytophthora rot was present in the field environments. The phenotypic correlation between tolerance and yield in five environments where phytophthora was negligible was non-significant (r =−0.09). There was a positive correlation between tolerance and seed weight (r = 0.31) and a negative correlation between tolerance and plant height (r=–0.25). None of these correlations is large enough to hinder development of agronomically acceptable, tolerant cultivars.

Notes: Abstract The effect of parental age at oviposition on the offspring of diapaused and non-diapaused females of Heliothis zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was examined under laboratory conditions. Diapause was induced in the laboratory by reducing day lengths and temperatures. The number of eggs per female, duration of the egg stage, percent hatch, duration of the larval stage, percent pupation and four-day pupal weights of progeny from diapaused and non-diapaused adults were determined. Significantly reduced egg production and increased duration of egg and larval stages occurred in offspring of diapaused females, but no effect on hatching and pupation percentages and pupal weights were observed. The possible effects of these differences on reproductive potential and length of generation are discussed.

Notes: Abstract An olfactometer was used to determine the effect of pheromones released by females of the bollworms Heliothis armigera (Hübner) and H. zea (Boddie) on females of the same species. Four combinations of virgin and mated females were tested for repellency of one to the other. Evidence is presented that females of the two bollworms were repelled by females of the same species. In addition, extracts of virgin female abdomens of each species repelled virgin females of the other species.
