Description / Table of Contents: A method for the analysis of TNT, RDX and HMX explosives in soils and sediments has been developed. It consists of methanol extraction followed by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography using 10% acetonitrile/40% methanol/50% water as the eluant. This method was used to study the effect of various drying techniques upon the recovery of TNT, RDX, and HMX from soil and sediment samples contaminated with high (%) and low (micron g/g) levels of these explosives. For highly contaminated samples, complete recovery of TNT and RDX was obtained using freeze drying while air drying at room temperature resulted in greater than 90% recovery for both explosives. Other techniques, such as oven drying at 105 C, oven drying at 45 C, microwave oven drying, and drying under infrared lamps, all resulted in greater losses, with TNT and RDX recoveries ranging from 76 to 90%. Drying losses were not due to simple volatilization containing low levels of TNT, RDX and HMX, recoveries of all three explosives were quantitative for all the above drying techniques.

Notes: Abstract During whole-cell patch-clamp recording from normal (nontransformed) human T lymphocytes a chloride current spontaneously activated in 〉98% of cells (n 〉 200) in the absence of applied osmotic or pressure gradients. However, some volume sensitivity was observed, as negative pressure pulses reduced the current. With iso-osmotic bath and pipette solutions the peak amplitude built up (time constant ≈23 sec at room temperature), a variable-duration plateau phase followed, then the current ran down spontaneously (time constant ≈280 sec). The anion permeability sequence, calculated from reversal potentials was I−, Br− 〉 NO 3 − , Cl− 〉 CH3SO 3 − , HCO 3 − 〉 CH3COO− 〉 F− 〉 aspartate, gluconate, SO 4 2− and there was no measurable monovalent cation permeability. The Cl− current was independent of time during long voltage steps and there was no evidence of voltage-dependent gating; however, the current showed intrinsic outward rectification in symmetrical Cl− solutions. The conductance of the channels underlying the whole-cell current was calculated from fluctuation analysis, using power-spectral density and variance-vs.-mean analysis. Both methods yielded a single channel conductance of about 0.6 pS at −70 mV (close to the normal resting potential of T lymphocytes). The power spectral density function was best fit by the sum of two Lorentzian functions, with corner frequencies of 30 and 295 Hz, corresponding to mean open times of 0.54 and 5.13 msec. The pharmacological profile included rapid block by external application of flufenamic acid (50 μm), 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino)-benzoic acid (NPPB, 100 μm, [6,7-dichloro-2-cyclopentyl-2,3-dihydro-2-methyl-1-oxo-1H-inden-5-y1) oxy] acetic acid (IAA-94, 250 μm) or 100 μm 1,9-dideoxyforskolin. The stilbene derivatives DIDS (4,4′-diisothiocyano-2,2′ di-sulphonic acid stilbene, 500 μm) and SITS (4-acetamido-4′-isothiocyano-2, 2′-disulphonic acid stilbene, 500 μm) prevented buildup of Cl− current after a 30-min preincubation at 500 μm. When tested in a mitogenic assay, DIDS, flufenamic acid, NPPB and IAA-94 all inhibited T-cell proliferation, suggesting a physiological function in addition to the observed volume sensitivity.

Notes: Summary This paper presents a new technique for fast and non-intrusive density mapping of wood based on far-infrared spectroscopy. The transmission of a piece of beech 1.7 mm thick is investigated between 0.1 and 2.5 THz. In this spectral range we find wood to be fairly transparent, but density inhomogeneities and structural details such as annual rings become visible in the transmission profile. The measured absorption correlates well with the wood density independently obtained by the gravitometric-volumetric method. Thus it finally becomes possible to transform the THz images into 2-dimensional density maps.

Notes: Summary Bifunctional maleimide compounds are suitable for binding small molecules to carrier proteins in that they bind to the sulfhydryl group of proteins through the double bond of the maleimide group and to molecules of low molecular weight (e.g. anticancer drugs) through a functional groupX. 18 maleimide compounds of the general formula Maleimid-R-X (R=phenylene, benzyl-, methylene-, ethylene, or am-benzoylethylamide group andX=hydroxy-, amino-, hydrazino-, carboxylic acid-, carboxylic anhydride-, carboxylic acid chloride-, carboxylic acid hydrazide-, oxycarbonylchloride-, aldehyde, keto-, orp-toluenesulfonate-group) were synthesized and characterized through1H- and13C-NMR-spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and mass spectrometry.

Notes: Abstract The feasibility of using melt spinning, of a high alloy nickel aluminide, as a microstructural analogue for aluminide diffusion coated nickel base superalloys is investigated in this paper. Transmission electron microscopy studies are used to characterize the relationship between coating and melt spun analogue microstructures. Attention is focused on three phases that are of principal importance in coating mechanical properties, namely: the B2 type β phase coating matrix, L12 type γ′ precipitates and M 23 X 6 carbides. The microstructure of the β matrix of the melt spun analogue is shown to closely resemble that of the coating. Evidence is presented that the formation of γ′ in the melt spun alloy generally occurs in a similar manner to that in the coating. The formation of M 23 X 6 in close association with γ′ in the melt spun materials is compared to similar events in the coatings. Limitations in the ability of the melt spun materials to recreate the microstructures resulting from incorporation of substrate M 23 X 6 into the coating and formation of M 23 X 6 within β precursor phases are discussed.

Notes: Abstract  Crude cyclohexane and ethanol extracts from D. granadillo as well as ethanol extracts from E. cyclocarpum proved inhibitive to fungal growth. Purification of the cyclohexane extract from D. granadillo, using silica-gel column chromatography, revealed even higher anti fungal activity for the second fraction.

Notes: Picea abies under different water conditions (60, 43, 19, 0%), determined gravimetrically by oven-drying at 103 °C after having taken the photographs. The voltage photographs show significant moisture differences between heartwood and sapwood which are usually not visible in trees with colourless heartwood. Moreover, moisture differences between compression wood and normal wood were clearly shown to exist. With regard to wood-based panel products moisture variations between different products as well as between the different components of one product were significantly observed by voltage photography and correlated to gravimetric measurements.
