Notes: Summary Chlorothricin, a new macrolide-type antibiotic, inhibits growth of the gram-positive organism, Bacillus subtilis, on chemically defined media with glucose or pyruvate as sole carbon source. Acetate has an antagonizing effect on the action of this antibiotic, but the inhibition is not completely overcome. On a medium with asparagine or aspartate, respectively, chlorothricin affects growth only at higher concentrations. In vivo 14CO2 incorporation experiments show that chlorothricin inhibits the anaplerotic CO2 fixation catalyzed by pyruvate carboxylase (EC 6.4.1.1.).

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The solubility of H2S at 25°C in solvents of the composition: [H+]=H M, [Na+]=(I−H)=A M, [ClO4 −]=I M was investigated by iodometric determination of [H2S]tot in the saturated solutions. Kp12=[H2S]tot·p H2S −1 was calculated. The results are consistent with the equation: $$\begin{gathered} \lg [H_2 S]_{tot} \cdot p_{H_2 S}^{ - 1} = --- 0,991_8 --- 0,059_0 [Na + ] + 0,008_1 [H + ]--- \hfill \\ ---0,000_1 [H + ]^4 . \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ At [H+]≦2 M the term with [H+]4 can be neglected. In the whole range investigated 0〈H, A, I≦3 M a simple additivity rule is valid with fair accuracy: $$\lg Kp_{12(A,H)} = \lg Kp_{12(A)} + \lg Kp_{12(H)} ---\lg Kp_{12(H_2 O)} $$
Im ganzen untersuchten Bereich 0〈H, A, I≦3 M gilt innerhalb der Reproduzierbarkeit der gemessenen Daten die einfache Additivitätsregel: $$\lg Kp_{12(A,H)} = \lg Kp_{12(A)} + \lg Kp_{12(H)} ---\lg Kp_{12(H_2 O)} $$

Notes: Summary A method is demonstrated to purify 2-substituted derivatives of glucose and sterically related sugars by affinity chromatography on Con A-sepharose. The method seems to be of rather general applicability.

Notes: Abstract The sorption mechanisms for trace metal ions on montmorillonite have been investigated. Complexation with surface hydroxyl groups located on the brocken edges of platelet particles is found to occur over a pH range similar to that observed on silica and other oxides, at comparable metal/site ratios. A second mechanism involving cation exchange on the negatively charge basal plane, which does not involve proton exchange in our experimental conditions, has been invoked to explain the low pH behavior. Consistent with this cation exchange mechanism, adsorption at low pH is strongly ionic strength dependant. A quantitative model which involves both mechanisms is presented and tested against both cation and proton adsorption data.

    Notes: Summary The protolytic behaviour of the TiO2 (Anatase)-water interface was investigated by potentiometric titration of finely divided TiO2 suspended in 3 M NaClO4. The experimental data could be explained assuming the following equilibria: $$\begin{gathered} - Ti - OH_2 ^ + \leftrightarrows - Ti - OH + H^ + ; \hfill \\ Ka_1 = \frac{{[H^ + ]( - Ti - OH)}}{{( - Ti - OH_2 ^ + )}} \hfill \\ - Ti - OH \leftrightarrows - Ti - O^ - + H^ + ; \hfill \\ Ka_2 = \frac{{[H^ + ]( - Ti - O^ - )}}{{( - Ti - OH)}}. \hfill \\ \end{gathered}$$ The computed equilibrium constants are related to the concentrations (in moles/kg) of protonated and deprotonated -Ti-OH groups by the equations $$\begin{gathered} \log Ka_1 = - 4.98( \pm 0.08) + 26.4( \pm 4.1)q(25^\circ C) \hfill \\ \log Ka_2 = - 7.80( \pm 0.05) + 13.1( \pm 0.7)q \hfill \\ [q = ( - Ti - OH_2 ^ + ) - ( - TiO^ - )]. \hfill \\ \end{gathered}$$ The results are discussed in terms of a polyelectrolyte model.
