Abstract Selective reduction of aromatic carboxylic acid N,N-dimethylamides with AlH3 or LiAlH4 in the molar ratio 2∶1 gave only the amines (in good yields). No steric hindrance was found, even pyromellitic acid octamethyltetramide gave 98% 1,2,4,5-tetra(dimethylaminomethyl)benzene. Surprisingly, AlH3 reduces 4-nitrobenzoic acid dimethylamide in nearly quantitative yield to dimethyl(4-aminobenzyl)amine. The reduction of aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid dimethylamides gives dimethylaminomethyl phenols or naphthols.

Zusammenfassung Durch selektive Reduktion von aromatischen Carbonsäure-N,N-dimethylamiden mit AlH3 und LiAlH4 im Molverhältnis 2∶1 sind ausschließlich die Amine (in guten Ausbeuten) entstanden. Sterische Hinderungen wurden nicht festgestellt, da auch aus Pyromellitsäureoctamethyltetramid 98% 1,2,4,5-Tetra(dimethylaminomethyl)benzol erhalten werden konnte. Überraschend ist, daß AlH3 das 4-Nitrobenzoesäuredimethylamid in fast quantitativer Ausbeute zu Dimethyl(4-aminobenzyl)amin reduziert. Die Reduktion aromatischer Hydroxycarbonsäuredimethylamide führt zu Dimethylaminomethylphenolen bzw.-naphtholen.
