Description / Table of Contents: Glass transition temperatures of binary and ternary blends of chemically uniform poly(styrene-co-n-butyl methacrylate)s with a mean content of 30.8 wt.-% of n-butyl methacrylate and number-average molar masses in the range of 4900 and 67000 g/mol have been investigated in relation to their composition. The blends showed significant deviations from an ideal behaviour with reference to a linearity between glass transition temperature and composition. This phenomenon is described by a mathematical model where polynoms are particularly well suited to represent the glass transition temperatures of the blends, partly exceeding those of the pure components. Finally, various reasons of these deviations were discussed. Here, energetical interactions seem to be of considerable importance combined with a nonadditivity of volumes.

Description / Table of Contents: Oligomers of styrene and acrylonitrile are prepared and characterized. The influences of these oligomers on the properties of poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) are investigated up to a concentration level of 5 wt.-%. In relation to the mechanical properties, tensile strength and flexural strength are decreased and impact strength is improved by oligomers. Thermal properties, especially glass transition temperature and Vicat softening temperature are strongly influenced by oligomers. Rheological properties are characterized by melt flow index and determination of melt viscosity in relation to different shearing rates. The effects of processing conditions on the optical properties, transmission to light and yellowing factor, are demonstrated.

Notes: The properties of the graft polymers of styrene, acrylonitrile, and vinyl acetate onto polybutadiene rubber that were prepared for the modification of graft polymers of styrene and acrylonitrile onto polybutadiene (ABS polymers) by emulsion polymerization up to a high degree of conversion have been studied and discussed. Both the impact strength and notched impact strength of the graft polymers have been found to remarkably increase with a rising quantity of vinyl acetate, in particular, in the case of styrene substitution, whereas in the case of acrylonitrile substitution by vinyl acetate, the two characteristics become noticeably poorer. The effects of the vinyl acetate amount and the type of substituted monomers on bending strength, tensile strength, Vicat softening point, and glass transition temperature of the graft polymers are also clearly different. Furthermore, the properties of the above graft polymers blended with styrene/acrylonitrile copolymers have been studied.

Notes: A new type of membrane polymer, containing a photosensitive moiety, was synthesized. The photochemically induced functionalization and crosslinking of poly [acrylonitrile-co-butadiene-co-styrene-co-2-(4-ethenyl) phenyl-5-phenyl-2H-tetrazole], ABSV, has been studied. A variety of dipolarophiles and phenolic compounds were applied to alter the polarity of the membrane surface. The functionalization and crosslinking were initiated by photoirradiation. DSC and contact angle measurements were used to characterize the modified polymer. Pervaporation experiments with a cyclohexane/benzene mixture (5 wt% benzene) were carried out, with the results showing, that the photochemical treatment significantly effects both permselectivity and flux. Solubility parameters were found to be useful to interpret the pervaporation data. In general, the selectivity towards benzene increases with the polarity of the membrane surface, i.e., with increasing polarity of the modifier. A mechanism to explain the influence of both functionalization and crosslinking on the membrane performance, is proposed. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Influencing plastic materials by reactive processing of polymer particles, as seen with extrusion processes for example, may be performed in an especially simple way and is described by taking the reactive processing of standard high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic material on a twin-screw extruder in the presence of a vinyl monomer as an example. In particular, the investigation deals with the influence of relatively low quantities - if compared with the comonomer portion - of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate on HDPE properties during polymerization. Furthermore, the effect of a powerful chain-transfer agent on the process of reactive processing and on the thermal-oxidative properties of the products made by use of them is shown. Doing this, carbon tetrabromide proved to be an efficient transfer agent. When presenting the properties of the formed extrudates, the mechanical and thermal characteristics and application-related tests, such as those on stress-cracking resistance, is emphasized. The findings of this investigation are discussed on the basis of correlating them to the lamellar thickness of crystallites and the density of tie-molecules. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The formation of oligomers up to molecular weights as high as about 800 was investigated in the iodine- and 4-nitrosophenol-inhibited thermally initiated copolymerisation of styrene and acrylonitrile by using column exclusion chromatography. In contrast to other possible approaches, such as the estimation of the rate of inhibition by analysing the inhibition period or trapping the initiating radicals through spin traps, this method offers the advantage of detecting the molecular species appearing during the inhibition reaction by directly estimating their molecular weights even in the higher ranges. A structural assignment of the discovered species is suggested and supported by the results of copolymerisation statistics. With iodine and 4-nitrosophenol as inhibitors, the oligomers of the thermal reaction of copolymerisation initiation, the reaction products of inhibitors with initiating radicals, as well as components of a higher molecular weight were detected and classified, and the mechanisms of their formation are discussed.
