Notes: Summary In a typical sawmill, about 12% of the wood which is cut is reduced to sawdust. Further material is lost during subsequent planing. A substantial part of this large loss of a costly natural resource can be saved by the use of thin, stable sawblades, but only if proper saw tensioning conditions are developed. The thickness of a stable sawblade can be minimized through optimal tensioning, an increasingly urgent objective because of sharply rising raw material costs. A theoretical model is presented which accurately describes the development of residual stresses in a roll tensioned circular sawblade and the resulting changes in saw critical speed. This model is essential for the reliable prediction of optimal tensioning conditions for any given saw operating state, and for the development of automated control of the tensioning process. An example is presented of an optimally tensioned circular sawblade for which a 40% thickness reduction is achieved compared with an equivalent untensioned sawblade with the same critical speed.

Notes: A mathematical model is developed to simulate the drying of hygroscopic porous media and, in particular, of wood. Drying rate experiments were performed using wood specimens and a nonhygroscopic porous ceramic solid and were simulated using the appropriate version of the drying model. Calculated model predictions are in very satisfactory agreement with experimental results. An examination of the relative impacts on drying of the transport mechanisms that comprise the model leads to meaningful interpretations of observed drying behavior. Controlling rate factors can be identified and different types of drying behavior specific to a given material or drying condition can be explained and understood through model simulation studies. Such capability can provide important guidance for drying process design and control.

Notes: Workpiece feed speed can be increased while maintaining product dimension accuracy by proportionately increasing saw rotation speed. However, the required saw speed increase is acceptable only if the speed does not approach the saw critical speed. Tensioning can be used to increase critical speed, but the amount of tensioning possible is limited by saw “dishing.” This dishing makes saw leveling very difficult. This study demonstrates the concept of using temporary tensioning to overcome the dishing limitation. Normally, the saw is only moderately tensioned. However, after installation in the sawing machine, the tensioning can be increased temporarily, here by thermal means. In this way, the saw is highly tensioned while in operation, but only lightly tensioned during maintenance. The preliminary experiments presented in this study demonstrate this concept, and confirm that a workpiece feed speed increase of more than 50% is possible by using temporary tensioning.

Notes: Abstract The hole-drilling method is used here to measure residual stresses in an orthotropic material. An existing stress-calculation method adapted from the isotropic case is shown not to be valid for orthotropic materials. A new stress-calculation method is described, based on the analytical solution for the displacement field around a hole in a stressed orthotropic plate. The validity of this method is assessed through a series of experimental measurements. A table of elastic compliances is provided for practical residual-stress measurements in a wide range of orthotropic materials.

Notes: Abstract A new six-element strain gage rosette is presented that can greatly improve residual stress measurement accuracy when using the hole-drilling method. The proposed rosette consists of three pairs of sector-shaped radial and circumferential gages connected as half-bridges. This rosette design increases effective strain sensitivity by a factor of 2.3 compared with a standard ASTM rectangular rosette, and can identify stresses at one-third greater depths from the measurement surface. Experimental measurements confirm theoretical strain response calculations within 3–4 percent. Apart from a small increase in time to complete the electrical connections, the practical use of the proposed rosette is identical to that of a conventional three-element rosette.

Notes: Abstract A novel method for enhancing the strain sensitivity of the hole-drilling method for measuring uniform residual stresses is examined. Such enhanced strain sensitivity is important because it improves the accuracy of the residual-stress evaluation. The new method involves enlarging the effective hole size by drilling a reverse taper hole. A simple practical technique for drilling reverse taper holes is described. The strain sensitivity for this new method is compared with that of the conventional hole-drilling method. Experimental results show excellent correspondence with theoretical results. The reasons for the sensitivity improvement are explained.

Notes: A simple, rapidly convergent procedure is described for solving a third-order symmetric eigenvalue problem Au = λ Bu typically arising in vibration analysis. The eigenvalue problem is represented in terms of its variational dual, the Rayleigh quotient, and the eigenosolution is obtained through a topographical search for points of quotient stationarity. The associated computer routine is compact and can easily be incorporated within the calling program. Degenerate eigensolutions cause no difficulty. An example FORTRAN routine is given.
