Investigations in the m-Menthane Series, IV. - Ene-Reactions of (3R)-( + )-Isosylvestrene and (3R)-( + )-Sylvestrene with Singlet OxygenSinglet oxygen, (1Δg-O2), generated by photosensitization reacts with (3 R)-( + )-isosylvestrene (1) and (3R)-( + )-Sylvestrene (27) to give allylic hydroperoxides which are reduced to the corresponding allylic alcohols 2-7 and 28-30, respectively, under retention of configuration. The constitutions and configurations of the new allylic alcohols as well as of their oxidation and hydrogenation products are determined by stereochemically unambiguously occurring transformations into m-menthane derivatives of known structures. The ene-reactions of 1, 27, and limonene (31) with 1O2 proceed exclusively at the trisubstituted endocyclic double bond; the disubstituted double bond of the isopropenyl group remains always untouched. The reactions at the trisubstituted double bond of the above mentioned 1-methycyclohexenes as well as of 1-methylcyclohexene (32) itself occur stereoselectively to produce similar product distributions independently of the solvent polarity. The reaction rates are practically the same for all the 1-methylcyclohexenes; they are, however, about ten to twenty times faster in methanol than in
Notes:
