Total analyses for ultramarine green, blue, violet and red have been performed and the sulphur compounds, formed on dissolving the ultramarines in acid, rigorously estimated. Electronic colour and ESR spectra of the ultramarines were recorded, too.Combination of the observed data reveals that the blue colour is due to the hypersulphide ion S2- and/or S3- and the red colour results from disulphurmonoxide, S2O. Both species are stabilised within the ultramarine lattice. Ultramarine green additionally contains a yellow colour component, presumably the disulphide ion, S22-. Ultramarine violet is obviously an intermediate between ultramarine blue and red.

Es wurden von Ultramaringrün, -blau, -violett und -rot Vollanalysen angefertigt und die beim Auflösen der Ultramarine in Säure anfallenden Schwefelverbindungen möglichst exakt ermittelt. Es wurden die Farbkurven in Reflexion und die Elektronenspinresonanz gemessen.Auf Grund der Kombination der gemessenen Werte wird vermutet, daß der blaue Farbträger das Hypersulfidion S2- und/order S3- und der rote Farbträger Dischwefeloxid, S2O, ist. Beide Schwefelverbindungen sind im Ultramarin, in Lücken des Kristallgitters eingeschlossen, beständig. Beim Ultramaringrün kommt zum blauen Farbträger ein gelber, im wesentlichen das Disulfidion S22-. Das Ultramarinviolett ist ein Zwischenzustand zwischen Ultramarinblau und Ultramarinrot.
