Notes: The Tutankhamun-class chariot is the earliest high-performance machine, most likely developed via racing and thoughtful mechanistic modelling and testing, and made with exquisite craftsmanship. The complex suspension system of springs and dampers comprises simple elements that are useful by chance, and also some well-designed and expensive components and subassemblies for advantages in structural dynamics and ride quality. These chariots' spokes and joints have aircraft-like damage tolerance, and are more sophisticated than those of any veteran car with wooden wheels. A substantially better overall design with the ancient materials of construction is difficult to visualize even if we apply our knowledge and computerized methods. This makes the Egyptian chariot an excellent example of original and advanced design, and a formidable challenge in further engineering investigations aimed at a full understanding of the ancients' achievements.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The “Universal Dielectrometer” that we have devised can be employed in the capacitive measuring position for dielectrometric-analytical measurement, while in the loss position it is possible to carry out conductivity measurements, oscillometric titrations, and if measurements are taken in succession in the two measuring positions it is possible to determine the dielectrometric loss (tgδ). In single instances, the “Universal Dielectrometer” can replace the tedious ultimate analyses, in other cases the quantitative group determinations (hydroxyl, carbonyl, sulfochloro, epoxy). This device may also serve as the indicator instrument for showing the endpoint of reactions, as for example in the sulfatation, where the “apolar solvent action” can be employed also in those cases in which neither dielectrometry nor oscillometry can be used directly.

Notes: Abstract Several critical aspects of stress measurements in composite materials by thermographic stress analysis (TSA; also SPATE method) have been investigated. The emphasis is on the observed effects of thermal-expansion coefficients with positive and negative signs, thickness of surface coating, and absolute temperature increases in the material due to cyclic loading. Heat transfer and mean stress effects are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the accuracy of the least squares method for finding the in-plane stress intensity factorsK I andK II using thermoelastic data from isotropic materials. To fully understand the idealized condition ofK I andK II calculated from thermoelastic experiments, the total stress field calculated from finite element analysis is used to take the place of data obtained from real thermoelastic experiments. In the finite element analysis, theJ-integral is also calculated to compare with (K I 2 +K II 2 )/E evaluated by the least squares method. The stress fields near the crack tip are dominated by the two stress intensity factors; however, the edge effect will cause inaccuracy of the thermoelastic data near the crack tip. Furthermore, the scan area of thermoelastic experiments cannot be too small. Therefore, we suggest that three or four terms of stress function be included in the least squares method for evaluating stress intensity factors via the thermoelastic technique. In the idealized condition, the error can be smaller than 3 percent from our numerical simulations. If only ther −1/2 term (K I andK II ) is included in the least squares method, even in the idealized case the error can be up to 20 percent.

Notes: Abstract The change in volume, and therefore the change in mass density, of an aluminum alloy was measured in uniaxial tension using clip-on extensometers. The experimental data do not agree with the assumption of plastic incompressibility found in the classical theories of plasticity. In fact, the elastic and plastic volume changes are of the same order of magnitude. Plastic anisotropy is thought to be the prime cause of this plastic compressibility.

Notes: Abstract This paper examines the stress concentrations in the knit yarn/fiber intersections in a unidirectional carbon/epoxy composite. Stress-concentration factors for four different knit yarn spacings are determined by thermographic stress analysis (TSA). This method is also known in the technical community by several other names. For example the SPATE method (referring to commercially available infrared equipment), and thermoelastic stress analysis. The latter term is not sufficiently descriptive since it is also used to describe purely analytical studies of thermal-stress problems of different phenomenology. Because of these and other technical considerations, TSA is the most accurate and specific terminology for the method at hand. The two-parameter Weibull distribution function has been applied to analyze the experimental results, and the correlation between the measured values and the distribution is shown to be very good.

Notes: Abstract An experimental-numerical hybrid method is developed for determining the individual stresses in orthotropic composites from measured thermoelastic information. This includes evaluating the thermoelastic calibration coefficients, effective processing of the noisy measured data, and separating the stress components at nonboundary locations. The method is illustrated experimentally by application to a uniaxially loaded fiber-reinforced composite plate containing a central circular hole.
