Dazu wird das Konzept des „intrinsic pressure hole error“ verwendet, und es wird für diesen Fehler im Rahmen der Theorie dritter Ordnung ein Ausdruck abgeleitet. Weiter wird gezeigt, daß das Geschwindigkeitsfeld für die instationäre schleichende Strömung einer Flüssigkeit dritter Ordnung zu jeder Zeit mit der zugeordneten stationären Strömung dritter Ordnung identisch ist. Im Gegensatz dazu hängt das Druckfeld jedoch von der zeitlichen Änderung der Strömungsgeschwindigkeit ab.
    Notes: Summary Unsteady third-order viscoelastic flow is examined for the purpose of determining a method by which certain material constants in theRivlin-Ericksen theory can be measured. The concept of an intrinsic pressure hole error is used, and an expression for this error is derived for third-order flow. It is also shown that the velocity field for unsteady creeping motion of a third-order fluid is identical at any time to a corresponding steady third-order flow. The pressure field, however, depends upon the rate of change of the flow with time.

    Notes: Abstract Following arteriolar occlusion, tissue oxygen concentration decreases and anoxic tissue eventually develops. Although anoxia first appears in the region most distal to the capillary at the venous end, it eventually spreads throughout the entire region of supply. In this paper the changing oxygen concentration, from the time of occlusion until the tissue is entirely anoxic, is examined mathematically. The equations governing oxygen transport to tissue are solved by iterating a nonlinear integral equation. This solution is valid until anoxia first appears. After anoxia develops it is necessary to solve a moving boundary problem. This is done using the method of matched asymptotic expansions, and accurate solutions are obtained for a wide range of physiological conditions.

    Notes: Abstract A kinematic analysis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is developed to determine the range of motion of the mandible during normal opening and during special motions required for arthroscopic surgery. The translation of the mandible is restricted by the constraint of the ligaments. By accounting for the maximum allowable stretch of a ligament, limits of translation are determined for any normal opening angle of the mandible. The present analysis provides information useful in securing the maximum available space for the protrusion of arthroscopic instruments during TMJ surgery.

    Description: This paper examines the synoptic conditions that yield extreme precipitation in two regions with different orographic features, the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound. To capture orographic extreme precipitation, a dynamical downscaling is performed, driven by the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis and evaluated for cool-season months from 1970 to 2010. Clustering techniques are applied to the regional climate simulation, which reveals the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound as regions with distinct temporal variability in precipitation. Results show that approximately one-third of the extreme precipitation events in each region occur without a similarly extreme event in the other, in spite of the fact that the two areas are very closely located and one is downstream of the other. Composites of synoptic conditions for extreme precipitation events show differences in integrated vapor transport (IVT) due to its dynamical component (winds at 850 hPa) and its thermodynamical component [integrated water vapor (IWV)]. For Puget Sound events, IVT is lower compared to Olympic Mountain events because of lower wind speeds. Olympic Mountain events have lower IVT compared to events with extreme precipitation in both regions, but in this case, the difference is due to lower IWV and more southerly winds. These differences in the large-scale conditions promote differences in the mesoscale mechanisms that enhance precipitation in each location. For Puget Sound events, static stability is higher, and there is a weak rain shadow. For Olympic Mountain events, static stability is lower, and a strong rain shadow is present. During extreme events in both regions, orographic modulation is minimized and large-scale effects dominate.

    Description: This work compares the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) and Hadley Centre Regional Model (HadRM) simulations with the observed daily maximum and minimum temperature (Tmax and Tmin) and precipitation at Historical Climatology Network (HCN) stations over the U.S. Pacific Northwest for 2003–07. The WRF and HadRM runs were driven by the NCEP/Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP)-II Reanalysis (R-2) data. The simulated Tmax in WRF and HadRM as well as in R-2 compares well with the observations. Predominantly cold biases of Tmax are noted in WRF and HadRM in spring and summer, while in winter and fall more stations show warm biases, especially in HadRM. Large cold biases of Tmax are noted in R-2 at all times. The simulated Tmin compares reasonably well with the observations, although not as well as Tmax in both models and in the reanalysis R-2. Warm biases of Tmin prevail in both model simulations, while R-2 shows mainly cold biases. The R-2 data play a role in the model biases of Tmax, although there are also clear indications of resolution dependency. The model biases of Tmin originate mainly from the regional models. The temporal correlation between the simulated and observed daily precipitation is relatively low in both models and in the reanalysis; however, the correlation increases steadily for longer averaging times. The high-resolution models perform better than R-2, although the nested WRF domains do have the largest biases in precipitation during the winter and spring seasons.

    Description: Extreme precipitation and temperature indices in reanalysis data and regional climate models are compared to station observations. The regional models represent most indices of extreme temperature well. For extreme precipitation, finer grid spacing considerably improves the match to observations. Three regional models, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) at 12- and 36-km grid spacing and the Hadley Centre Regional Model (HadRM) at 25-km grid spacing, are forced with global reanalysis fields over the U.S. Pacific Northwest during 2003–07. The reanalysis data represent the timing of rain-bearing storms over the Pacific Northwest well; however, the reanalysis has the worst performance at simulating both extreme precipitation indices and extreme temperature indices when compared to the WRF and HadRM simulations. These results suggest that the reanalysis data and, by extension, global climate model simulations are not sufficient for examining local extreme precipitations and temperatures owing to their coarse resolutions. Nevertheless, the large-scale forcing is adequately represented by the reanalysis so that regional models may simulate the terrain interactions and mesoscale processes that generate the observed local extremes and frequencies of extreme temperature and precipitation.
