In:  Supplement to: Burke, Roger A; Sackett, William M; Brooks, James M (1986): Hydrogen- and carbon-isotope compositions of methane from Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 618, Orca Basin. In: Bouma, AH; Coleman, JM; Meyer, AW; et al. (eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, Washington (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 96, 777-780, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.96.148.1986
    Publication Date: 2023-06-27
Description: Hydrogen- and carbon-isotope compositions of methane (dD-CH4 and d13C-CH4) and pore water hydrogen-isotope compositions (dD-H2O) in several samples from the uppermost 100 m of Orca Basin sediments show little variation with depth and have mean values of - 184, -73.5, and 7 per mil, respectively. The dD-CH4 is typical of that generally found in deep-sea sediments and suggests that the methane was produced biologically almost entirely via the CO2 reduction pathway. Production of small amounts of methane (-15% of the total) from acetate dissimilation cannot be completely ruled out, however. The pore water is more enriched in deuterium than present day Gulf of Mexico deep water, suggesting that the brine found at the bottom of Orca Basin was formed at a time when appreciably more isotopically light water was tied up in continental ice sheets than is at present. The d13C-CH4 values reported here are similar to previously determined brine d13C-CH4, but substantially more enriched in 13C than previously determined pore water d13C-CH4. Isotopic evidence and the decrease in interstitial salinity with depth suggest that most of the methane production within the Orca Basin system occurs in sediments deeper than about 5 m sub-bottom. Small deposits of isotopically anomalous methane occurring in near-surface sediments may be the result of spatially variable inputs of slumped material to the sediments underlying the anoxic, hypersaline brine.

In:  Supplement to: Sackett, William M (1986): d13C signatures of organic carbon in southern high latitude deep sea sediments; paleotemperature implications. Organic Geochemistry, 9(2), 63-68, https://doi.org/10.1016/0146-6380(86)90087-2
    Publication Date: 2023-06-27
Description: The 7% carbon-13 depletion in cold water phytoplankton provides a striking signal that is traceable in deep-sea cores taken in high latitude regions of the Southern hemisphere. This signal may be weakened by noise due to (1) terrestrially derived debris in areas close to the continents; (2) changing current patterns resulting in varying settling trajectories; (3) erosion and redeposition and (4) maturation-diagenetic effects. Data for two cores taken southwest of Australia are evaluated with respect to these interferences.

Description: The Th230/Pa231 activity ratio in 7 of 11 manganese nodules is less than 10.8, the theoretical production ratio of activities in the ocean. This finding indicates difierential accumulation of these nuclides in authigenic deposits of manganese-iron oxide.

In:  Supplement to: Mo, T; Suttle, C A; Sackett, William M (1973): Uranium concentrations in marine sediments. Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 37(1), 35-51, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(73)90242-1
    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Uranium concentrations in a large number of marine sediment samples of different types with world-wide spatial distribution have been determined using the rapid, precise and nondestructive technique of counting the delayed neutrons emitted during U235 fission induced with thermal neutrons. Several interesting relationships were apparent. 1) A direct proportionality was observed between percentage of organic carbon and uranium in sediments deposited in an anoxic environment in the Pettaquamscutt River in Rhode Island with concentrations ranging from 7 per cent organic carbon and 7 ppm uranium to 14 per cent organic carbon and 30 ppm uranium. A similar relationship was found in cores of sediments deposited on the Sigsbee Knolls in the Gulf of Mexico. 2) For manganese nodules a direct relationship can be seen between uranium and calcium concentrations and both decrease with increasing depth of deposition. For nodules from 4500 m in the Pacific, concentrations are 3 ppm uranium and 0.3 per cent calcium compared with 14 ppm uranium and 1.5 per cent calcium at 1000 m. 3) Relatively high uranium concentrations were observed in carbonates deposited in the deepest parts of the Gulf of Mexico, with the >88 ? carbonate fraction in Sigsbee Knoll cores having as much as 1.20 ppm. A model to explain the observed variations must include uranium enrichment in near shore environments via an anoxic pathway, followed by redeposition in a deep ocean environment with dilution either by low-uranium-bearing foraminiferal or silicious oozes or, along the continental margins, dilution with high-uranium-bearing carbonate sands.

Notes: The sloughed skin from three captive manatees at Lowry Park Zoological Garden (Tampa, Florida) was examined over a period of one year to determine its stable carbon isotopic composition (δ13C). The food consumed by these manatees in a controlled diet was also sampled and its δ13C values determined. The sloughed skin δ13C values from the captive manatees were enriched by an average of +4.1%0 relative to lettuce (generally 〉98% of the diet) the animals consumed. δ13C values of the skin were shown to be related to changes in δ13C values of the lettuce. The stable carbon isotopic composition of internal tissues (liver, kidney, and blubber) and skin from dead, stranded manatees was also determined. These values were compared to values of vegetation that manatees are known to eat in the wild. The δ13C values of the internal tissues and skin of wild manatees were consistent with the range of δ13C values of their expected diet.
