Description:
Polycrystalline YMn 2− x Ti x O 5 ( x = 0.00–0.05) samples with partial substitution of Mn by Ti are prepared in order to modulate the multiferroicity of YMn 2 O 5 . It is revealed that the substituting Ti ions are in the Ti 4+ valence state and prefer to occupy the Mn 4+ sites. The lattice structure has slight volume expansion upon the Ti substitution, although the symmetry remains unchanged. A proper Ti 4+ substitution surprisingly allows significant enhancement of ferroelectric polarization and appearance of weak ferromagnetism. It is suggested that the substitution induced Ti 4+ O 6 octahedra and modulated exchange-striction are possibly responsible for the enhanced ferroelectricity and improved ferromagnetism.
