Description: The interpolating moving least-squares (IMLS) method is discussed in detail, and a simpler formula of the shape function of the IMLS method is obtained. Then, based on the IMLS method and the Galerkin weak form, an interpolating element-free Galerkin (IEFG) method for two-point boundary value problems is presented. The IEFG method has high computing speed and precision. Then error analysis of the IEFG method for two-point boundary value problems is presented. The convergence rates of the numerical solution and its derivatives of the IEFG method are presented. The theories show that, if the original solution is sufficiently smooth and the order of the basis functions is big enough, the solution of the IEFG method and its derivatives are convergent to the exact solutions in terms of the maximum radius of the domains of influence of nodes. For the purpose of demonstration, two selected numerical examples are given to confirm the theories.

Description: Adrenal steroids bind specifically to hippocampal neurons under normal conditions and may contribute to hippocampal cell loss during aging, but little is known about the neurophysiological mechanisms by which they may change hippocampal cell functions. In the present studies, adrenal steroids have been shown to modulate a well-defined membrane conductance in hippocampal pyramidal cells. The calcium-dependent slow afterhyperpolarization is reduced in hippocampal slices from adrenalectomized rats, and it is increased after in vivo or in vitro administration of the adrenal steroid, corticosterone. Calcium action potentials are also reduced in adrenalectomized animals, indicating that the primary effect of corticosteroids may be on calcium conductance. The afterhyperpolarization component reduced by adrenalectomy is greater in aged rats than in young rats, suggesting that, with aging, there is an increased effect of corticosteroids on some calcium-mediated brain processes. Because elevated concentrations of intracellular calcium can be cytotoxic, these observations may increase the understanding of glucocorticoid involvement in brain aging as well as of the normal functions of these steroids in the brain.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Kerr, D S -- Campbell, L W -- Hao, S Y -- Landfield, P W -- AG04542/AG/NIA NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1989 Sep 29;245(4925):1505-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2781293" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Using trend coefficient method, vector analysis method, and monitored meteorological data across China, climatic characteristics and spatial pattern of fogs in China were investigated. The results show that most fogs occur in southeastern China. Thin fogs usually occur in fog-rare regions and dense fogs take place in fog-prone regions. The number of annual fog days in most regions of China exhibits a decreasing trend from 1980 to 2010. It also found that the regions with more fog days correspond to the lower concentration degree of fogs, and vice versa. In terms of the national scale, the concentration periods of fogs are mainly in November, December, and January in China. We further classified the occurrence frequencies of fogs into five spatial distribution patterns over a single year according to the spatial distribution characteristics of fogs occurrence frequencies of 36 dekads, namely, a whole year can be correspondingly divided into five phases. Based on this, multi-year ...
