Abstract Quantitative biomechanical analyses of approaches for the reduction and fixation of lumbardorsal injury are presented in this paper, entailing (i) classification of the types of injuries, (ii) analysis of the critical functional levels of forces exerted on the injured spinal structures and the stabilisation devices and (iii) the basis for the various modalities of injury reduction stabilisation modes, and for the use of conventional posteriorly attached compression or distraction devices, as well as anteriorly placed vertebral stabilisation-fixation device.
